I just repainted a 1950 Mississippi tag I found in my barn from the guy who use to own my house. I soaked it in Phosphoric acid for a day took it out hit it with a stainless steel scouring pad and water. Put it back in for another day and cleaned it up. Put it on a flat surface and hammered out the dings. Then I primed it and painted the base color. It looks great so far I will post a photo later tonight. The tricky part is the numbers etc.. I am going to roll the paint on with one of those hard black rollers like you use in a dark room to roll prints out flat. They are a hard rubber roller but only about 4" wide so it will take a few passes. I have to wait 7 days to re-coat what is on there now according to the can. I hope to roll the roller in black paint then across the letters. I will let you know how it all works out. Somewhere I saw a film on how they made tags and they rolled them through a machine that looked like an old ringer washing machine with the top roller supplied with paint from a hopper deal. Unfortunately the tag is 2 years to old to use on the back of my 52' but I may hang it on the front just for looks.

I fixed up a set for my '37. Mine are black back ground with white letters so it was not to complicated. For the back ground I powder coated them gross black, so in case I made a mistake, the white would come right off with out taking off the black.

For the letters I used a ceramic based glass and dish paint I found at the local craft store. Sort of like a liquid powder coat, once dry, you bake it for 20 minutes and it smoothed out and got a nice shine to it. The hard part was hand painting them, not really that hard, just took a lot of time.

Right up close you can see the flaws, get back a bit and they look just fine. Check the web for license plate painters and restorers, the prices may scare you in to trying it yours self!

My Ca 46 plate is black with white lettering, I first painted it all white then black, after it was good and dry used rubbing compound on the letters down to the white. This was a while back using lacquer paints. If you cannot find lacquer this also may work with what ever is available.

Basically I did mine like you did, Jim.
Mine are OSHA orange with black letters. I throughly stripped the original paint off of the plates. I removed all of the dings, dents and ripples out of the plates. The hardest part was the edge of the plates, bareing in mind that 1937 plates weren't that straight when they were new. I painted the plate black with Krylon paint. I put 25 coats of black on the fresh metal. This took several days. I define a coat as a fairly quick pass over. After they had dried for severl days, I put one coat of OSHA orange on the total plate, not worrying too much if I didn't cover the letters well. I let the plats dry well, again for several days. I then took 1400 grit wet sand paper and using a sanding block and allot of water, sanded the letters using the block flat. Occassionally I had to work down the edges of a letter to get the full effect of the black paint. Once finished, I rubbed them well with compound. I did not clear coat them, but that can be done also.
This is a pretty long process, but the results are very good.
The idea of power coating the undercoat, or the color of the letters, is good, it saves some time and the powder coat should stand up under the 1400 grit paper and water, but I have never tried it.
After doing a set, I can understand why a pro charges what he might charge. It takes allot of time. The other big secret is that you have to have a decent set of plates to start with.

The powder coating worked well, not many paints will hurt it, and it is soft enough you can sand and polish just like paint, just be sure to put on alot or double coat it. Joe
