I have a spare groove on the crankshaft pulley. Any tips on brackets and such for an installation? | | | | | Joined: Jun 2004 Posts: 8,597 Riding in the Passing Lane | | Riding in the Passing Lane Joined: Jun 2004 Posts: 8,597 | There is a splitter that lets the alt charge 2 bats. but only one is used for running the vehicle. Most RV's & service trucks use this system. They say money can't buy happiness. It can buy old Chevy trucks though. I had one on my 84 pickup to power my cabover camper. All you need is another batter the isolater and a place to mount the extra battery. The way it works is as you drive, the alternator charges the main battery. Once it is charged then it charges the second battery. As the name indicates it also isolates the two batteries, so you always have a charged battery. | | | | | Joined: Feb 2009 Posts: 137 Wrench Fetcher | | Wrench Fetcher Joined: Feb 2009 Posts: 137 | My inverter peaks at 5KW, so I need a large battery bank AND alternator to power it, more than the present alternator and battery can handle.
This machine already has 3 power systems on board; a 12VDC engine and running gear system, a 12VDC "house" system and a 120VAC "house" system for shore power or generator.
Separate systems will allow the most flexibility. A few brackets and minimal wiring, and it is done. | | | | | Joined: Feb 2004 Posts: 29,851 Kettle Custodian (pot stirrer) | | Kettle Custodian (pot stirrer) Joined: Feb 2004 Posts: 29,851 | It would be a lot simpler to upgrade to a large single alternator, maybe a 200 amp capacity, or something similar. Check into adapting your existing mounting system to allow you to install an alternator like a tractor-trailer system would run. It's virtually impossible to have too much amperage capacity, as the battery will only accept enough current to charge itself. Once both battery banks are fully charged, the regulator will cut the alternator back to a minimum charge, no matter what the upper current limit might be. When I ran a diesel shop service truck, I had an 8D series 12 volt battery that weighed about 120 pounds, and a 200-amp brushless alternator. My booster cables were made from 1-0 welder cable and would carry over 1,000 amps. Boost-starting a big rig was no problem! Jerry

Any tips on selecting the right alternator, or is it a standard item?
Seems like I remember reading that the 292 has a longer shaft on the alternator... | | |
