| | | | Joined: Jun 2008 Posts: 145 Wrench Fetcher | | Wrench Fetcher Joined: Jun 2008 Posts: 145 | I started having charging problems last summer and thought it was just a bad ground.Have had the truck out for a couple clear out the mothball runs and am still having problems.On the first trip ammeter showed generator not charging till we hit a bump then it kept working for the rest of the 45 minute trip.Tonight it is showing no charge again.Generator is converted to 12v and tests ok,regulator as well.this is on a 54 with the original 235 and most of the wiring is the same vintage.Is it possible it could still be a grounding problem or will the wiring be the most likely source of my troubles? It could be any number of things, but I'll bet it's a sticky voltage regulator. The 'F', or field wire, when touched to a good ground should put the generator into full field output. This means it will charge max and should be noticeable on your ammeter. If this works, it's another strike against the voltage regulator.

The starter did give a faint grunt after we pulled the truck out of the shed.On our first drive this spring I thought it didn't turn over when I hit the button ,but,just figured I didn't push it hard enough. | | | | | Joined: Jun 2008 Posts: 145 Wrench Fetcher | | Wrench Fetcher Joined: Jun 2008 Posts: 145 | Bad connection on the positive battery terminal starting without trouble now,I feel kind of embarassed about that.Great advice though Stuart, ammeter needle started moving as soon as I touched it and kept charging after gruond was removed from field terminal.Just prior to this after I got the truck running I took it around our country block and it started showing a charge part way, shut it off ,started it again and again no movment on the ammeter while revving till I used Stuarts remedy.
