Hey All,

I've been working on fixing a leak on my rear differential and found out I not only needed a new pinion seal (as expected), but that unless I installed a Speedi-Sleeve, my new seal would probably wear out in short time. The local shops want $50 for the one I need (99259), but believe it or not, Amazon.com has the same one for $31 - still not a deal, but better than $50! Plus, it's free 2-day shipping!

You'll need to find the part number on your own because Amazon can't help you there, but once you find it, type the part number and 'sleeve' in to the search box and you should find it. I hope that helps someone out there smile

Sometimes you can lay a piece of wire in the groove where the seal goes. This will move the seal out the thicknest of the wire, so the seal can rub on a new spot on the yoke. Then you won't have to buy or install a speedi-sleeve. I quess I'm just cheap!!!!

Local parts houses have a different price code for different classes of customers and there is a huge difference in the price if they class you as a repair shop instead of a do it yourselfer.I check various sources before I buy anything unless I need it this minute. I just got 10 gallons of synthetic air compressor oil from WW Grainger who usually isn't cheap, but they have a free shipping promotion and the free shipping made it the most reasonable.

Those sleevs are expensive for what they are but cheap for what they do. I agree with Cren, there are a lot of different prices out there.

They say money can't buy happiness. It can buy old Chevy trucks though. Same thing.

Thanks Brian,

If I hadn't already ordered the sleeve, I'd give your idea a try. Hopefully someone reading this later can learn they have other options than the local parts store on something like this.

Are you serious about the price? I put one on my crankshaft where it comes through the timing cover. Its only paper thin metal and it was about $7.00. Unless we are talking about something entirely different.

I stand corrected. I checked the NAPA catalog and that part number is indeed $49.95. However it is different in size and shape to what I referred to. The sleeve for the crankshaft is still priced below $10.

I think that would be a pretty clever trick(the wire one-MM) if you got away with it , but you would be replacing the seal sooner than if you did nothing. you can always replace the yoke with a new one.
perhaps the one by amazon are from china, so they would be a good place to purchase it from.
a proper brg est would stk all sizes and you may get a better price there.
you wouldn't be very happy if your boss went shopping tomorrow for someobne to do your job cheaper

It's SKF brand just like the ones at NAPA. The box says it is made by or for SKF in Illinois. No mention of China on the box, but I suppose it could have been. If you've ever seen one of these things, there is no way it costs more than $1 to make one, so even at $31, there's plenty of money being made, and I'd bet nearly all of it is being made right here in the US of A.

I've seen the sleeves they sell at NAPA and they are VERY high quality, completely machined and ground to tolerances. I've also see the inexpensive ones and all they are is a stamped metal part.

I'd say the price for either is fair. You just have to decide how much it's worth to you.
