They seem pretty solid but I would like to replace the "female/receiver" part . In LMC & Brothers catologs, you have to upgrade to the new style ends. Can the local NAPA get these or can you reccomend a source?

I'm putting the power steering conversion on my 52panel and its recommended that I switch to the "new" type "tapered" tie rod ends. As I understand it I should be able to use a "modern" tie rod end to replace my old ones....but I don't know which ones to buy.
So, are the upgrades in LMC and Brothers the "new tapered" type or just a "new" version of the old ones??
I did some searching a while back when I was buying the conversion kit and I remember that I could get BOTH ends for about 75 to 80 dollars..... and if I knew what they were using them off of I could get them through Advance Auto and get my discount.
Am I making sense to anyone??
The conversion kit I got says I can use the old ones "with some work on them" but I want to avoid a bunch of stufff that will not turn out good and I want to be safe!! So, if anyone can help please do. If you have used an over the counter tie end rod when going to power steering can you give me the part # for them ..... and hope I can return the favor some day. Dou you have a good parts book that you could check specs in? You might see if you can check the specs for thread size and stud taper and length. That should get you in the ballpark for what application to use. I'll check my Moog catalog and se if I can come up with something myself and let you know if I can decipher it.

I wrote down, but lost, the info. I checked at Advance Auto to see if they could order them and I believe both of them were about $70....but it could have been #70 each. I just can't remember. But even at that I can get a 20% discount and also not have to pay shipping.
Thanks for any info and if the one who posted the Moog # some time ago reads this I would appreciate it. | | | | | Joined: Feb 2000 Posts: 5,197 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Feb 2000 Posts: 5,197 | Here are some links to tie rods. Theses are all the same, just different vender's. This is the modern replacement that is a bolt in, they have a straight shaft that replaces the ball stud you have now. If you go to a really modern tie rod, you will need a taper reamer. In the last link from the Filling Station, you will find the replacement tie rod or the rebuild kit for the ball and socket tie rods. Theses are just an example whats out there. I bought a set of NOS from ebay and had one go bad right away, I replaced them with a new set from Classic Parts (Chevy Duty) http://www.classicparts.com/WebCat1_Single.pdf (page 65). They work really well and seemed to smooth up the steering. My old ones were rebuild and worked OK, but theses are better. I have a 57 and they had rebuild kits for the tie rod ends for $31.49 & new tie rod for $40.00 after my "Stovebolt" discount. I am not sure what differences yours would have from mine, but $31.00 to rebuild both ends vs. $97.00 each would have me checking into it. 1957 Chevrolet 1/2-ton Stepside LB in the Gallery My Photobucket shots The person who has nothing for which he is willing to fight, nothing which is more important than his own personal safety, is a miserable creature and has no chance of being free unless made and kept so by the exertions of better men than himself." - John Stuart Mill (1806 - 1873) | | | | | Joined: Oct 2006 Posts: 289 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Oct 2006 Posts: 289 | I would expect "modern replacements" from anyone to have a slight taper and all steering arms to be un-tapered. There are more specific posts on my experience if you search. | | |
