Is there a way to get the darn things off the metal shaft on the end of the cable without destroying the knobs? thanks

If I remember correctly they cut the old cable off, drilled out the knob and siver soldered it onto the new cable. | | | | | Joined: Aug 2008 Posts: 52 Wrench Fetcher | | Wrench Fetcher Joined: Aug 2008 Posts: 52 | For my 54's cables I held the stem that the knob attaches to and held it a bench vise, then I heated the stem with a propane torch just enough to where I was able to pull the knob off the the stem. I cut it off and put the shaft/knob in a lathe and drilled a hole in the end. The local piano rebuilding shop miked my original wire and gave me a piece of piano wire the same diameter which I brazed onto the shaft/knob. Wire free, knob/shaft one dollar, brazing fifty cents. End results? Priceless! That was 10 years ago and it is still intact. | | |
