This is all new to me and I am mechanically challenged. I want to put a 235 in my 48 and want to put a 3 or 4 speed transmission with floor shift and open driveline in it since I am updating the rearend to a 64 with 3:73 gears. I have read alot on this site about transmissions but I need one that will bolt right in with the floor shifter in the right place. Can I just try to find one out of a 55 2nd -62 truck or what. I just want to be able to drive on state routes and back roads without the engine winding out. Help!

You may be on the right track with the 55 to 62 unit. That 4 speed is a floor shift and would be my choice for an easy swap and should be inexpensive. There is an overdrive T-5 unit that is very popular now. You should read all the threads and tip on this site and over at inliners.org re the T-5.
