Again, thanks! | | | | Joined: Jan 2005 Posts: 364 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Jan 2005 Posts: 364 | Got an alternator question, on of all things, a Dodge D500 fire truck. All I need to know is if I can replace a stock alternator with 1 field terminal, with a newer rebuilt alternator with 2 field terminals. If so, how do I wire the stupid thing. Thanks Electrical Gurus (I promise when I get this thing going I'll go back to my Loadmaster and my '67 C-10.)

Or give us a lot more info please. | | | | | Joined: Feb 2004 Posts: 29,773 Kettle Custodian (pot stirrer) | | Kettle Custodian (pot stirrer) Joined: Feb 2004 Posts: 29,773 | The 2-terminal alternator has what's called an "isolated field" system. There is no internal ground for the alternator field coil. It you choose to use the 2-terminal alternator, just ground one of the field terminals (doesn't matter which one) and run the original field wire from your existing regulator to the remaining field terminal.
The factory wiring for the isolated field alternator ran 12 volts to one field terminal, and put the regulator on the ground side. That one takes a different regulator so the simplest way is to create an external ground for the replacement alternator. Jerry

If it has an internal regulator you may have a field and a sensing connection as well as the batt. terminal.
