Check over at inliners.org, they are more into high rpm then here. I would bet 4000 or 4500 would be about it with knowing whats inside. Peak hp is not top rpm, its just the point you run out of power so theres not much reason to go past it. | | | | | Joined: Nov 2000 Posts: 171 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Nov 2000 Posts: 171 | MY 67 K20 has 4:56 to 1 gear rato it would scream at 60 mph but it would run like that all day and did for 200,000 miles I don't think you can kill those engines! | | | | | Joined: Dec 2003 Posts: 2,733 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Dec 2003 Posts: 2,733 | FWIW, I've seen race prepped and balanced engines run at 7K but I agree that 4500 is reasonable. | | | | | Joined: Feb 2009 Posts: 137 Wrench Fetcher | | Wrench Fetcher Joined: Feb 2009 Posts: 137 | Wow, I was cruising on the first long trip averaging about 3Krpm, letting it edge up to 3200 downhill before climbing up the other side.
I'm hoping the electric fan will quiet down the racket a bit, the noise from the close-by engine and minimally insulated dog house in the Grumman makes it sound like all he# is breaking loose in there!
Next trip is next weekend, maybe I'll let it run up a bit further, maybe pass a car or 2...! | | | | | Joined: Sep 2006 Posts: 841 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Sep 2006 Posts: 841 | i thought stock 292 engines petered out at 3500. why push it more on the long stroke? | | | | | Joined: Feb 2000 Posts: 5,233 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Feb 2000 Posts: 5,233 | UPS runs a bunch of 292's and they seem to last pretty good and they run the crap out of them! You should have no problem running them to at least that. In my buddy's father's tow rigs, we regularly hit 4500-4800 when empty.
