More than one horse per cube running on pump gas.

I'd clean up the valve covers, look for an early dual carb manifold, switch to a vintage dual point distributor and put those parts on a crate 383 stroker motor.

Should still pull 300 horse, and still look like a vintage motor to most people looking under the hood.

Myself, I would run the camel hump heads & a slightly dished piston, have the seats replaced w/hardened. Gasket match everything. Use a cam around 290 adv. duration & around .450 lift. Good q-jet or 600 Holley on alum intake. Pay for balancing, get a good flywheel. HEI, double roller timing chain. Not positive you will get 300 honest HP to the rear tire(it is "only" a 283), but this combo has run very well for me on a couple Chevs in the past. I have also seen rodders bore 283 .120 or more for extra cubes. I have my eye on a 62 283 in a C50 nearby. My 2 cents, Brian

Since you have a computer... why not call Summit racing and get a program called "Desktop Dyno"
it will show you what horsepower theoretic pieces will make to a very close margin... usually within 10%... it will take the guess work out and allow you to make power with different head, cam, piston, carb combos.... and will allow you to maximize your performance dollar.... if you saw some heads on Ebay... this program would let you know what could be done with them in a matter of minutes... buddy have some forged flat tops he doesn't want???.. now you know what to do with them.... this program and shopping on Ebay or the Racepages make parts hunting and engine building fun... without the 'oops' of a poorly performing combo... money well spent...buena suerte amigo...make it smokin V8! -K

I'd spend the money on hotrodding a 350 or not spend so much money on the 283 and just make a dependable street motor out of what you have (cam, carb, exhaust, intake manifold). If you want HP, start with some cubes and the sky is the limit.
