My name is Billy and I am from Jacksonville, IL. My Dad and I run a towing operation and handle tire and wheel sales as well. Anyway, I have a 1951 GMC 1 1/2 ton wrecker that I am starting to restore and Dad has a 1950 Chevy 1 1/2 ton wrecker (handcrank winch) that needs restored.

I'll be adding pictures of both trucks and look forward to reading/learning what is here.

Thanks and if I can be of any assistance to anyone here..? Please feel free to call us anytime.

Billy.

Hi, welcome. It's always neat when a father / son can work together on projects like that. So, are you planning to use the old rigs to haul in cars?

I'd rather walk and carry a Chevy hub cap than ride in a Ferd.

Well, to answer your first part; We have our own body man who is currently working on fixing some issues we have with the doors and the cab. But, we all will be pitching in. I'm not a very good/knowledgeable body man. I bought the truck about 2 years ago and took it apart right away and worked on here and there in the summer months and it got put away in the winter time (our busy time).

My goal was to fix these trucks up for show/parade, but always thought it would be really cool from time to time to go use them on an accident/wreck call. With the new cars of today, sling towing is about gone. A lot of cars require a flatbed or the owners request a flatbed be used. To each their own. The '51 GMC and one reason I bought it had a rare "axle lift" attachment to it that I really hadn't seen many of. I know SPANKY has the most of one person outside of the International Towing and Recovery Hall of Fame and Musuem in Chattanooga, TN.

(Sorry for the long response in the Intro room)

Welcome to the 'bolt, Billy cool

You can be as windy as you like, anytime smile

That's neat you and your dad are a team at work and like the same trucks. If the "axle lift" you mention is the PTO kind of system ('driven' by the transmission), those are way cool thumbs_up It's a long story but we still have a chance to pick up a '49 flatbed 2 ton with one... Don't tell my mom though, she'd have a cow if she knew (you can find her once in awhile in The Spoon) & we still haven't told her about the last truck we got that we haven't drug home yet grin

There's a ton of information here and nice folks too so make yourself at home. Those trucks will be great for advertising your business, even if you won't be towing with them.
