I have a 1965 chevy c20 with an inline 6. I have just bought it and only driven it twice, about 30 miles on both trips. It was running like a champ, real strong. Yesterday on my second trip it drove fine the first 15 miles to my sisters house, then when i went to leave i got a few feet down the road and it just choked out.

What it's doing:

It idles perfectly, and when normal gas is applied through the pedal it revs fine. However, if you press the pedal or the throttle arm quick to the floor it sounds like it is sucking air and after doing this 3 to 4 times consecutivly it backfires loudly. I would also like to mention that the choke and its compents are confusing at best and do not look stock, but they worked fine the first 45 miles.

When its driving:

It seems to run ok, not as good as the first 45 miles, in first and second gear but when i shift to 3rd it does not respond to the gas pedal and if its getting a load like an uphill it will eventual shut the truck off. I checked the timing and distrubutor, it checked out good.

Sounds like a clogged fuel filter.

Jon.

Good carburetion is fuelish hot air
The most expensive carburetor is the wrong one you attempt to modify.

I have been fooled by point gap, the fibre block wears and you don't have any gap and the thunder is taken from the engine.

Do you have any loose plug wires?

if dwell and gap are fine along with timing, Get a clean rag, remove air cleaner, open the butterfly and build rpm, at a high, cover the air intake with the rag and keep the throttle open, this will choke the engine down when it slows, remove the rag and let it build rpm, repeat a few times and see if this backflushes the jets. Sometimes it is enough to get whole again.

Check for a blockage at the tank. Pull the line at the fuel pump and blow back towards tank. Lots of crud builds up over the years,
Scott
