Went to all the big chain auto parts stores and nobody sells or mixes automotive paint. Even NAPA didn't do it. They said they could order it if I gave them a paint code, otherwise they don't even have any knowledge where or what's needed. Not that long ago when I was a teenager, who knew nothing of such things, I went to Carquest. They matched the paint, sold me all the proper paint, mixing supplies, and essentially told me what to do. I've been out of the area for 10+ years, and don't remember more specifics. | | | | | Joined: Dec 2006 Posts: 443 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Dec 2006 Posts: 443 | Check with any local body shop & ask who they get their paint from. You should have several paint suppliers in your area. 1957 Chevrolet 1/2-ton Stepside LB in the Gallery My Photobucket shots The person who has nothing for which he is willing to fight, nothing which is more important than his own personal safety, is a miserable creature and has no chance of being free unless made and kept so by the exertions of better men than himself." - John Stuart Mill (1806 - 1873) | | | | | Joined: Sep 2001 Posts: 29,270 Bubba - Curmudgeon | | Bubba - Curmudgeon Joined: Sep 2001 Posts: 29,270 | It looks like these places stock PPG auto paints. PPG can come up with a modern formula to match most old paint codes. (However, sometimes the PPG dealers do not know who to call at PPG.) | | | | | Joined: Oct 2001 Posts: 3,458 Extreme Gabster | | Extreme Gabster Joined: Oct 2001 Posts: 3,458 | Environmental regulations are tighter than they used to be. Most stores probably find it too much of a bother to carry paint. There should be an automotive paint jobber in most US cities.

That way they don't have to buy so much paint and they can adjust the shades to match faded paint. You could probably find one of these that could mix what you need, but they probably won't have the old codes. Most however, can match the paint with electronic scanners, but remember that the paints of today aren't anything like what our trucks had on them.
