Looking for ideas. Getting ready to start restoring my 1965 Suburban. I'm thinking of a two tone color scheme. White on top and red on the bottom. Tinted windows. I was also thinking of some ideas for the interior. I want to try making my own head liner. I'm thinking of using tan colored elk hide!!

As far as the front seat, I'm not sure what I want to do. I really like bench seats, but buckets would make it easer to reach the back from between the seats. I know I'm not going to put a second row seat because I want the room.

I'm keeping the 292 engine, I will change the rear differential gear ratio though. I'm thinking 353 gears?? I want to improve gas milage, cruse the highway, and still be able to pull a small trailer.

Any ideas??

I like the red and white idea,...you born Canadian by chance ? lol smile Yeah the bench seat is hard to throw yourself and the lady over at the ol drive in so buckets seats are cool ( you,ll thank me later ) smile If you go with tan colour on the inside,..will that clash with the red and white on the outside ? Interior sounds like something Ted Nugent would do eh ? Elk Hide interior with camo paint on the outside. What if ya made Uncle Ted proud and did a camo job on the outside ? AnyHoot. I like watching OverHaul their paint schemes are cool,...maybe check out a show or two. Maybe blend two of the colors from that year on her with some modern taping techniques. Ok I,ll shut up now,...hope all goes well, and ya get your sweety a nice manicure (paint) and a new interior. Thumbs up man. smile

I never thought of it clashing with the outside paint, good point. I was going to paint the inside a different color, a darker color but not sure what yet. I was thinking of the tan hide matching an interior color scheme. I will have to think this thing thru.

As far as the seat, it will be a trade off, weather we want quick access to the back or my wife to sit by me while driving, LOL.

Thanks for the advice!

The tan interior would be good and depending on what shade of red you go with it shouldn't clash much. I like the idea of the red/white, that will give it a nice look. I really like the idea of the elk hide, that would be nice. Keep us posted as to what direction you go with it, and post lots of pics once you get rolling on it!

At first I was thinking of painting the Sub all red, but I have seen alot of all red Sub's out there so two tone red and white seems like a good choice. I'm going to tint the windows also.
with chrome grill, bumpers, trim, and wheels I believe it will come off well.

I'm still not sure what the interior color will be but I want it a darker color to off set the tan elk hide head liner. But, I want to be careful not to make the interior look like a pimpmobile! LOL!!

Thanks. I hope so. I just have to decide which shade of red I want. I'm not much for flashy paint jobs, so it will probably be a slightly darker red.

Now that is a strict personal preference thing! I personally don't like chrome... I hate the stuff... See what I mean? You'll have to decide that on your own. If you like it and can find chrome wheels that you are happy with, then go for it.

Just out of curosity, why no chrome? What don't you like about it? My '60 has painted bumpers and hub caps and I do kind of like it. I probably wouldn't put any chrome on that truck when I decide to redo the paint and such.

On the other hand, I do plan to put chrome on the Sub.

I just don't care for a flashy look on the old trucks. I figure the door handles and such are more than enough chrome...lol... Plus, if you have too much it can be a pain to keep it clean. I'm a bit of a perfectionist so if there are spots on chrome it drives me nuts! I don't discourage others from using chrome though.

I know just what you mean. I envy the guys who have a "natural" paint job. In the summer when the bugs are out it's a pain in the neck to clean my truck after every ride. As you know the '60's trucks have all kinds of little places where bugs smash into, especially around the headlight bezels! Chrome will add to the cleaning for sure.

Hey Iron Clad. just so you have an idea of what a little bit of shiny looks like on the rims, here is a photo of what I put on my 65. And here is one of the my oldest daughter in truck just after I finished up the engine compartment. Now I'm not trying to "convert" ya to the chome side or anything. Just thought I would show you how nice a "little bit" goes. I know I need to get some better , updated shots of the truck, but there all I have for now. smile

Give me my Truck, or...my truck daamit! Cause i aint leavin without it!

Looks good Don. I think chrome looks good with a red truck too, which is kind of the look I'm going for.
