For helping keep this great
old truck web site
on the Internet for over 30 years! and not clogged down with Ads! Again, thanks! | | | | Joined: Jan 2008 Posts: 9 New Guy | | New Guy Joined: Jan 2008 Posts: 9 | Greetings, fellow bolters. I'm a relative newbie to these vehicles; always had euro stuff before but also always wanted a truck like the '51 3-ton dump I have now. It's going in for body and paint next week; I'm too embarrassed to drive it in its current hue of fluorescent orange done with spray cans and no masking (previous owner). Anyway, I can't figure out the model numbering system and I have no chrome emblems for the side of the hood. I hear talk of Chev 3800 and Chev 6400, but have no idea what the numbers mean. Do you know what I have and what emblems I should be looking for? If it helps, it's a Canadian "Maple Leaf" model, ex-Royal Canadian Air Force (and only 43,000 miles from new!). Thanks for your consideration; Tim

I dont think number designations were given till halfway between the advance design series, the year in one of those links, I've seen it before, but dont have time to do a search though them now. Sorry, but I think this should at least get you started.
No 'bolt yet, but if you'd like to help me out with that, send me a message! Or check out my wanted add in the swap meet.

It's useful info, but doesn't tell me what emblems I should be looking to put on the side of the hood, which are missing. Also, I guess there were no 3-tons in the U.S., whereas they were produced in Canada. Plus, the VIN is quite a bit different from the ones outlined on the techtips page. However, I was fascinated by the Jim Carter catalogue. That's amazing! I learned something unbelievable to me there: What makes a Chev. "Maple Leaf" a Maple Leaf is that it has a GMC 228 or 248 cu in engine. I thought I had a 235, but that didn't start until later, leaving the 215. Not that either, apparently. This helps with getting parts; I could've ordered all the wrong stuff if you hadn't shown me that page. Thanks very much! Tim

Canada evidently used a different conversion table to compute the tonage rating of trucks. A 16000lb. gvw U.S. built G.M. truck was considered a 2 ton truck. Got any pictures of it , you can show. | | |
