No kiddin' of course I never said anything about cheap on this deal!!! Really though,it is hard to work and catch someone else who works to get this deal done as the engines are at a third location. Don't give up!

Not to steer this thread off course but these DUKW's may have been grouded due to safety concerns. Back in 89 the wife and I went on a little vacation to Hot Springs, Arkansas. We took a "duck" ride on Lake Hamilton. Sometime after that one of those things sunk in that lake with fatalities. I would guess that the insurance got too high for small private concessionaires to keep them afloat. I don't know, Do they still run the ducks in the Wisconsin Dels? It would be kind of a shame to scrap-out those 60 year old pieces of history. Ford Guy, do you know any background on them?

Still doing Duck tours here in Seattle. 2 years ago, one started to sink. They were able to drag it ashore without anyone drowning, yet they are still doing it.

I talked to a guy who did it in galveston. Nice guy. His had been repowered with a gm hei 350. Made it run a bit better. But they have low gears. Not fast in the water either. He said that the ducks are getting rare and a good one is going for over 100K. I could have bought one in the 70s for $2k.

All you have to do is make sure the seals are in good shape. Apparently basic maintenance is beyond the capacity of some peoples' brains. 60 year old rubber is going to be shrinking and cracking... :rolleyes:

GMC Panel is right, there is a seal that can let in more water than the bilge pumps can pump out. I can give you the true story if anyone is interested on what happined.

Yes, and no. I have yet to get to see them but I know they are still there. The guy that has them is very busy and I will have to just catch him. I keep thinking that will be any day but you are right, it has been awhile.

I still think it's a rural legend. I'll bet this guy with the motors lives next door to the old guy with the chicken houses full of old cars that all still run and are for sale for $500 each.

Doodlebug, lets be honest with ourselves if this old guy is any kind of farmer then he wont sell cause if you want it, it must be of value and he still wants it, or he is helping to put all that iron back in the earth by watching it rust away.

If the motors ever surface, wouldn't it make more sense to sell them to military collectors as opposed to civilian truck owners?

DASchaefer, do you mean like the scruffy looking guy at the local swapmeet who had everything on his space priced for $1.00 or less, but would not sell the dogdish hubcaps off his rusted out dodge van even after I offered $50 for them. I think we have all been there before.

Canyon...no. Military 302s are fairly plentiful, and it isn't hard to convert one to fit a civvie mount.

Okay, I gotta ask this then GMC,if military 302s are fairly plentiful why are we so interested in these 302s since they are out of military DUKWs. (Be gentle, remember I'm a Ford guy.) Since I was a youngster I have always been interested in cars, trucks and such and it seems the ulitmate General Motors 6 was the 302(at least back then)which is why my ears perked up when I heard of this deal. It would be like me finding a 312 Ford or a 427 or the like. Are non military 302s fairly extinct? Are they better? Should I persue this deal or forget about it? If everybody really wants these babys though,I'm still workin on it.

Part of me says "if there's this much interest then let it ride" while another part of me say's "look, it's been 4 1/2 months and almost 60 posts and nobody really knows anymore than he did so cut it off". Frankly I'm prone to the latter. It time to move on gentlemen but I'll leave it up awhile longer just be advised.

Definately military engines are more plentiful but involve more work. Those who truly want to buy one should investigate it at the Inliners site where members have them for sale.

I saw in the casting #'s that the 248 block I have was also used for the 302;is it possible to bore a 248 block to a 302 bore,and use the guts from a military 302 in it?

Doodlebug, thats what Iam talking about, when I parked my 51 chevy 6400 at the body shop the owner had several farming buds, ask what it was doing there and after he told them they all laughed and said I could have the two or three they have sitting on thier farm, so the next time I was at breakfast with him I siad I would take them all to help them get rid of them, they all changed there toon and either wanted big money or were going to fix up one day HA,HA
