WE HAVE A FELLOW STOVEBOLTER COMING OVER FROM NEW ZEALAND. "KIWIWILLY" HAS BOUGHT A 48 TO 53 COE CAB AND FRT SHEET METAL AND HAS A CONTAINER SET TO BE SHIPPED FROM SAN FRANSISCO. THE EXPORT RULES HAVE CHANGED AND HE NEEDS A TITLE AN ID PLATE IN ORDER TO EXPORT THE SHEET METAL. CAN ANYONE OUT THERE HELP.
TIME IS OF THE ESSENCE AS HE NEEDS TO GET THE TITLE INFO TO HIS SHIPPER BEFORE THIS COMING WEDNESDAY. SOMEONE MUST HAVE A PLATE AND TITLE FOR A 1 1/2 TO 2 TON TRUCK,DOESN'T HAVE TO BE A COE.

I would not advise anyone to supply VIN plates or other documents that would help with the falsification of this shipment......

Especially when U.S. Customs has already set their sites on it.

he is not trying to move a stolen vehicle. his truck cab has a serial# plate on it, it's just that the title has long since disapeared from 1948, go figure. as long as he can show continuity of ownership thats what really matters. the system has been intensified now for all us honest folks and we're now having to pay the price for actual smuggers who steal cars and ship them overseas. you used to be able to buy a cab & frt sheet metal, call it parts and ship it abroad and bolt it to another chassis, ie building of a hot rod. he is certainly not trying to do anything illegal, he's just trying to cut through this latest introduction of red tape. once his truck is built it will have to pass a mechanical check and he will have to show his paper trail which serial# is noted. like i said before there's nothing illegal here, i'm just trying to helpd a friend who is now running against the clock with this latest bureaucratic BS to now deal with.

I would not be hesitant to do it if I had what you need. However, most of these vehicles were titled my engine number instead of chassis number. I think he is going to have a time frame trouble. It takes 2 days for Fedex to New Zealand.

Yea, Sure, Nothing illegal.... You are just asking for a VIN plate that does not belong to the vehicle & you are requesting the paper title to help falsify the bill of lading.

I suppose you are going to tell us that you have no intention of removing the VIN plate that is on the truck & installing the new one in its place. LOL

I don't know how they do things in Canada but, around here you can get in trouble for that.

I strongly object to you referring that I might be trying to ship a stolen vehicle.
Maybe there are a lot of dishonest people around but I am not one of them. I purchased this COE cab from a rod builder in the Bay Area and recieved a bill of sale but because of all the dishonest people US Customs is now insisting on (pink slips)
when someone wants to ship even only a truck cab out of the country.

Guys I don't know the federal laws or the California laws, but in the State of Washington it is a felony to tamper with the serial number, meaning likely jail time. What you are talking about doing would sure qualify.

Its not that you are trying to steal this truck, but that the rules around the paperwork have made it illegal in many places just to remove and replace the id plate.

It is actually illegal in the State of Washington to sell a vehicle without a title. It sure does not stop people from offering cars and trucks with no title on Craigslist or eBay.

do these antiques predate VIN # ?
mine has the engine serial # on the title
and a body serial # on the cab door jamb,
they are not the same number

The current meaning of VIN is something that was new in the 70's. But these vehicles still have a serial number that is often called a vin, and yes many of them were titled off the engine serial number.

It gets messy and the modern rules can make it easy to screw up if you don't know what you are doing.

just to clarify matters. My COE has a body serial#/GVW tag on the A pillar. All I can do I suppose is to contact California DMV and try to get a new title issued hopefully in time before my container is due to leave. Hopefully beaurocracy will not make the process take toooooo long
