For helping keep this great
old truck web site
on the Internet for over 30 years! and not clogged down with Ads! Again, thanks! | | | | Joined: Jan 2009 Posts: 55 New Guy | | New Guy Joined: Jan 2009 Posts: 55 | The cab on my 53 AD one ton has rust in these places, two inches up on the toe board, from the toe board back to the seat riser, and half way up the side kick panels. The cowl outer panels are perfect (the fenders bolt to this part). Is it possible to remove the floor, toe board, and kick panels without disturbing the cowl panels? Would I be able to drill out the spot welds etc ? Thanks --- I'll be on line for a while, if you need more info! | | | | | Joined: Mar 2007 Posts: 863 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Mar 2007 Posts: 863 | Repro panels come left and right, no problem replacing, just make sure you scribe and measure before and after to make sure nothing moves...or tack weld support braces to hold things together... do it one side at a time.... | | | | | Joined: Jan 2009 Posts: 55 New Guy | | New Guy Joined: Jan 2009 Posts: 55 | Thanks 1958GMCnut, I guess my main question is, without disturbing the outer cowl panels will I be able to get at required surfaces for grinding, removing, and welding? | | | | | Joined: Mar 2002 Posts: 9,115 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Mar 2002 Posts: 9,115 | If the outer cowl panels are OK, then yes you can do that. I would cut up the kick panel on either side of where the inner to outer is attached. Then I would remove the welds from the remaining kick panel piece. There are patch panels to replace these areas. | | | | | Joined: Sep 2007 Posts: 2,644 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Sep 2007 Posts: 2,644 | You'll want to drill through the spot welds in the windlace channel, remove and save it because you'll need it later. | | | | | Joined: Dec 2001 Posts: 14,522 Moderator: Welcome Centre, Southern Bolters, Legion Hall | | Moderator: Welcome Centre, Southern Bolters, Legion Hall Joined: Dec 2001 Posts: 14,522 | If your toeboard is rusted half way up then I would suggest buying the replacement floorboards that come with 1/2 the toeboard all in one piece.(for each side) All vendors do not carry the floorboard/toeboards like this but I do know the Car Truck Shop in California carry it. The shipping is sort of steep but barter to with them to send both pieces for the same shipping price!
As mentioned the inner panels are all about the same. I "think" Jimcarter may have some made here in the USA. CAll them and ask if they are "grey" as the USA pieces are that color. If they are black then they came from accross the pond.
The little windlace strip can be aggravating. If you can't drill the welds out as suggested there is some available. JimCArter carries that windlace piece but it ain't cheap. I paid $19 for a 12" piece to weld to my new inner panel! Its not hard to make but the body man wanted it ASAP! Good luck and keep us posted. | | |
