The Stovebolt Site Forums The Shop Area General Truck Talk Frame Mount Fuel Tank for Short Bed 64-66

I thought my sweat equity might help some other bolters out there. I am nearly finished installing a 49-52 Chevrolet passenger car fuel tank in the rear frame of my 65 C10 Shortbed.

I bought the new steel tank from Tanks, Inc. (FYI: Bob Drake is also selling these tanks now too, and for a few bucks less than Tanks, Inc.) The reason I used this tank is it does not stick down to low like a lot of these rear mount tanks do and the fuel filler neck comes out of the corner instead of the top.

Nice work. I like the way the tank fully fills the space from the pan hard rod mount/cross member all the way back to the tail cross member.

It looks to be about 20 gallons, is that correct? How high does the tank & upper mount measure from the top of the frame? Do you think the upper mounts will interfer with the cross sills for the bed?

* I measured the external dimensions of the tank and ran the numbers. The tank capacity is 15 gallons.

* The distance from the frame to the top of the supports is 2 inches. The rear main cross sill will be relocated. The plan at this point is a marine plywood floor, with the plywood actually resting on the upper gas tank supports. I also plan to put access covers in the floor to gain access to the sending unit.

I have been looking for another idea for my 64.
I didn`t particular like the way the aftermarket tanks hung down so low, either.

What type of filler door you ask... are you ready for this? How about a 37 Ford passenger car filler neck and cap.

Just spent the day widening my stepside bed 4 inches today. Yeah, I know, I am wierd I did this for more rear tire clearance and just so it looks better: This will hide the indentations on the back of the cab & the stepside beds are actually narrower than the front width of the truck at the front fenders, to me that is backwards.

I could have bought the wider fenders, but to me those just don't look right.

I will post some pictures as things progress a bit further.
