Fellow Stovies,

I'm trying to get my '75 rearend ready for powdercoat. I cannot seem to get the bearings out of the ends of the tubes (where the axles go) nor the bearing in the end of the chunk (where the yoke ties to the driveshaft). Any ideas?

Thanx in advance!

Hi Mike,

We park in the driveway and drive on the parkway because people in this day and time park or drive just about anywhere they want. Anyway, to your bearing question, There are two types of bearings in GM products that I have come across. One is pressed on the axle and comes out with the axle. The other that you have is pressed into the housing. There is very little lip on the inside, but enough to use a slide handle puller with a hook attachment to screw on the end. If you hold the tool and your mouth right, work from side to side and it should slowly come out. One time I had a hard time so I took my roto-zip with a small wheel and cut an X into the race (after all the rollers came out using the puller) and took a punch to knock away the pieces. This took the tension off the outside of the race and it finally came out. Sometimes you can go all the way through with a long bar from the opposite side and knock it out. It takes different techniques for different jobs of the same kind. Hope this helps. Good luck.

Tinker,

Thanx for the reply; I'll try it after work today.

I like the long rod from the far side myself. The slide hammers I have tried just don't work for me. Rebar or some other long rod works the best.

Check the wear on your axles where the bearings ride. If they are worn you you question them, go to NAPA and get new bearings with the seal atached to it. They call them wear replacement bearings or something like that. It relocates the bearing on the axle. They seam to work pretty good and it could save from buying new axles.

Guys, I got a piece of 1" pipe about 6' long from work and knocked the bearings out from the opposite ends. Joe, I'll be buying the relocated bearings when I put it all back together.

Thanks for all your help!
