on the dash of my 1950 to the left of the steering column is a little round pushbutton, about 1/2" in dia. doesn't seem to do anything when i push it. whats it for? looked through all the old online manuals i could find and not a one says anything about it.

Maybe someone converted to a solenoid started and installed a push button in a hole they drilled into the dash? That location is where the solenoid-starter push button is located on Hydra-Matic-equipped 53-55 New Design and 54-55 Advance-Design trucks (and, maybe on Forward Control trucks/vans from 1948 and newer?).

Are there still wires connected to the rear of the push button?

no the starter is still on the floor and to be honest i haven't looked behind it to see if there are wires coming out or not.

Welcome to the Stovebolt. Tim speaks the truth. I bought a '54 naked cab that had the small hole directly above the headlight switch hole, which is on the left side of the steering column.

I think Tim is actually the person that pointed out that this was the location for the starter push button for a Hydra-Matic rig. If your cab really did have this transmission, the transmission cover on the floor will be different too. Instead of being almost flat with the floor, the cover will extend up the toe-board for 4" or so.

There are probably more clues, but Tim would be the expert on those...my find was just a fluke.

When the 216 was replaced with a 235 in my 1950 Chevrolet they took out my stomp starter and replaced it with a solenoid starter and they put the button right between my headlight knob and gauge. And thats how I start my truck which in turn makes it a pain for me if my starter ever goes out because they totally eliminated my stomp starter stuff even the hole in the floor has sheetmetal welded there.
