"Carbking" reply to a recent post suggested I put a Carter 400 CFM carb. on my Offy intake for my 250c.i. Either a model 9400 or 9410. Only problem is... I can't find a new one anywhere. Is there a place where these exist that I haven't found or is there another one which is it's equal by another name/number/manufacture?

The Holley #7448 350 CFM 2-barrel is a good choice for engines the size of the 250. They're available through JEGS, and various other internet/mail order suppliers. We use them on the NASCAR round track engines instead of restrictor plates, on the low-budget "claimer" engines. A properly set-up Chevy 350 will run 6,200 RPM with one of these carbs, so a 250 I-6 definitely won't be under-carbureted with one installed! Holley also makes some low-volume 4-barrels if you've just gotta have four holes to breathe through, but a 4-BBL on an I-6 is a waste of time and money, IMHO!

oldchevytrucks.com supplies a 390 CFM Holley.

Carter discontinued the 9410 (which superceded the 9400) in the late 1970's due to lack of interest (many wanted to put two 750's on a 283 - bigger is better). Finding a new carb might be difficult. I simply suggested that this carb would be the easiest to tune, as it was calibrated from the factory for the 283. Used/rebuilt carbs are available, but you have to look.

Also, I would certainly agree with Hotrod Lincoln on the 2 barrel (although I would personally pick a Rochester instead of the Holley). We have had a number of customers get 6800 on a 383 Chevy on 3/8 mile dirt track with a rejetted 400 Chevrolet 2-barrel.

Yep, I'd pick a Rochester, too, if I could! The local track specifies not only the brand of carburetor, but the part number, too! BTW, I just edited the former post for the correct part number. It's a #7448! There's also a 500 CFM 2-BBL Holley that will breathe a little better, but our myopic tech crew won't pass that one!

I wrote a tech artice on various carbs I tried out on my Chevy 261 engine for Inliners Newsletter.The engine was in a good state of tune,3/4 cam,Fenton headers,more compression,proper valve job,minimal cylinder leakdown.A 250 Chevy breathes better than the 261,but the comparisons should hold true for both engines.
All carbs were on a Clifford water heated intake,Carter(expensive) 400 cfm,Holley 390 4bbl,Holley 350 and 500 cfm 2 bbls,500 cfm Edelbrock.The carbs were jetted if necessary for best cruise vacuum and wide open throttle performance.Part throttle response was judged by by "feeling",wide open throttle performance was timed on a back road, between 2 power poles using 2000-4500 rpm in second gear.
In the end,they all performed pretty much the same,but the Holley 390 4bbl offered better midrange respnse due to it's easily adjustable vacuum secondaries.It was the only 4 bbl that you could quickly floor the accelerator pedal at 1000 rpm in first gear,and it would pull to readline with seamless power.No real difference in fuel mileage between carbs for my tests.The Holley 350 and 500 2bbls(about 270 and 370 cfm respectively if you rate them as 4bbls),ran well,but the 500 2bbl may be slightly large for slow speed work depending on your engine tune.
A few guys on this site run Holley 390 and 450 4bbls I rebuilt for them on 292 Chevy engines,they seemed to be satisified,like I didn't get any death threats.
60's Ford V-8's and 266 and 304 IHC truck engines use a Holly 2 bbl that's more or less similar to to a new Holley 350 2bbl.You can pick them up on the cheap from Ebay.A good deal if you're capable of rebuilding a carb.The stock jets in these carbs work out ok on a Chevy 6.
I also tried out a large Rochester 2 bbl 2GC,I was not satisifed with the performance,and time ran out before I jetted it properly.
I hear some guys say Holleys always leak fuel,they do if you're ham fisted,it's nice they don't have fidgety little springs and metering rods that always fall into crevices when doing jetting changes with carb on engine.

I followed the info Tony previously provided and am running a 390 Holley on my 261. If you look at my engine pic you'll probably notice that it's mounted backwards--that's so I could use my old "footfeed" and fabricate a linkage and cable system that doesn't stick out like a sore thumb. Running 50's and a little heavier spring. Life is good.

Hi, I am needing a decent, straight 63 grille. Painted or chrome. Maybe a pair of headlight trim rings also. Let me know what you have.
