on the Internet for over 30 years! and not clogged down with Ads! Again, thanks! | | | | Joined: Feb 2006 Posts: 649 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Feb 2006 Posts: 649 | I'm at a loss to figure out why the 350 in my 53 3100 is hard to start when its hot. It's not over heating, about 190, but acts like its coming up on compression "turns over slow". I've tried to retard the timing but it don't seem to help. The 350 does have a lumpy cam, don't know what the duration is. Never a problem when its cold. Battery is charged and cables are clean/tight. Thanks, in advance. Hey just wanted thank everyone for thier input, I never would have figured it out, until the starter gave up.

Also make sure positive cable is insulated from exhaust heat . GOOD LUCK. | | | | | Joined: Aug 2007 Posts: 1,859 Grumpy old guy playing with trucks, cars, and boats | | Grumpy old guy playing with trucks, cars, and boats Joined: Aug 2007 Posts: 1,859 | starter shield and battery contactor trick required.
The problems we face today can not be addressed at the same level of intelligence we were at when we created them - Albert Einstein Or with the same level of $ - Me

It would not start when hot, but started great cold. I tried the wrap around heat shield (be careful not to let it touch the hot wires tot he starter when you wrap it around there. It did not work. I fabricated a shield that clamped to the exhaust pipe to shield the started, did not fix it. I found a kit that Painless wiring offers for Chevy "hot start" problems. It basically just adds a F@$$d solenoid between the battery and starter. This has worked like a champ for many years. | | | | | Joined: Jul 2004 Posts: 5,708 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Jul 2004 Posts: 5,708 | Kevin, I have seen and heard about this Painless 'hot start' kit and must admit, I sure don't understand the technology behind it. Why adding a Ford type solenoid between your battery and starter made your rig start easier is beyond me...but you say it works so I'll take your word for it. That is why I am a mechanical engineer and not an electrical engineer. I actually went to my local FLAPS and talked to the old streetrodder there. He gave me a wiring diagram and sold me the Ford solenoid for a few bucks. I did not actually buy the kit from Painless.
I still have the wiring diagram if you need it. But you can Google "hot start" and "Chevy" and come up with it. | | |
