Again, thanks! | | | | Joined: Aug 2008 Posts: 19 Apprentice | | Apprentice Joined: Aug 2008 Posts: 19 | When I bought my '58 Apache the dipstick was missing. Tube is still there I just need the stick. Is there anywhere that I can find a replacement? I've looked at LMC and Carters and a couple other places but none seem to have them. Maybe someone out there has a spare that I can buy from them?? The engine is a 235.
Any info would be appreciated. | | | | | Joined: Feb 2006 Posts: 1,867 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Feb 2006 Posts: 1,867 | On my GMC 248 I used a SBC dipstick and ended up cutting about 6-8" off it. Fits fine. | | | | | Joined: Aug 2008 Posts: 19 Apprentice | | Apprentice Joined: Aug 2008 Posts: 19 | I'm sure it would fit ok, but how on Earth would I know where the oil level should be without the markings? | | | | | Joined: Aug 2005 Posts: 6,377 Ex Hall Monitor | | Ex Hall Monitor Joined: Aug 2005 Posts: 6,377 | Change the oil. Leave the filter alone so it's full of oil. Add the recommended amount of oil minus one quart. Run the engine for 30 seconds & mark the level on the dipstick. That's your one quart low mark. Add one quart & mark the full level. The edge of a file will work well for making the marks.

I believe there were different heights on the tubes that stick out of the block, (at least on GMCs Im pretty sure) so even having a replacement from another 235 might not help. | | | | | Joined: Dec 2005 Posts: 2,557 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Dec 2005 Posts: 2,557 | Post in the truck parts wanted forum,I'm sure somebody will have one. 1951 3100 Chevrolet1951 Chevrolet Suburban CarryallImage"A house is built with boards and beams.
