I have an 1988 Gmc p/u. when i turn the ignition on the fuel pump is puming gas up to the injectors, but they aren't shooting gas into the intake before i turn it over. what could be causing this?

The injectors trigger from the "crank" signal from the ignition module. Is it getting spark, and do the injectors spray during cranking? If so, it's working like it's supposed to. If it was squirting gas before you crank the engine it would flood. Try a 12 volt test light, to the "tach" terminal of the distributor cap. It should flash rapidly when the engine is cranked. If not, you've either got a bad module or pickup coil in the distributor. In that case, there will also be no spark, along with no spray.

yes it does spray gas into the engine and it does start (after cranking it a while) i juss thought that i remember it spraying a gas for three seconds and then kicking off (like it was a choke) thank you for the help though.

If it cranks over and always eventually starts, I'd check the fuel pump relay on the firewall. If this relay fails, the Control Module senses the fault and provides +12 volts from another source (I believe from the oil pressure sensor, once oil pressure is detected).

Some gm v8's have a ninth injector that sprays a constant spray of fuel into the manifold only while starting. Maybe it's screwed up?
