Question:
I have a 235 with a mechanical fuel pump on it. If it is working properly, should it hold fuel at the carb after shutting engine off? Mine is very hard to start after sitting for a day or so, because it has to pump fuel back to the carb. Once the fuel is to the carb she fires right up.

there should be enough gas in the float bowl to start it the next 3-4days.
and by the time you crank some there is more gas.
pull the gas line off the carb
turn over engine and you should see gas thru in tubing.
if not or very low levels, check fuel filter or clogged fuel line or pump diaphram

squirt carb throttle and see/hear gas inside carb. or check for stuck float, needle & seat for flow or clogged orfice

After sitting for a day I usually dont have a problem. But if I let it sit for 2-3 days, the gas has usually evaporated out of the carb and it takes a little longer.

Ha,thanks guys for the feed back. I was just curious because it seems to have to crank alot after sitting. I just got this thing going and it runs out great. After putting a filter before and after the pump the fuel seems to only be present in the filter before the pump after sitting for a day. Thanks for the B-Day wishes.

After a few days the highly combustible part of the gasoline has evaporated, leaving the less potent part still in the cab. It doesn't ignite as easily. If your ignition system isn't operating at 100%, you can get hard starting. You may want to check everything there. Don

One thing often missed, is the "primary coil wiring", low voltage. The wire connecting to the "plus" side of the coil and the small wire going from the coil to the distributor must be in great condition to provide full current through the coil. If wire strands are broken at these terminal connections of the distributor and coil, the ignition system will not work effectively. Don

Kevin, my 38 has to crank a bit when she sits for a while. I suppose it could be an issue of a bad valve in the fuel pump allowing gas to slowly siphon back into the tank. The next time she sits for a week or so I'll need to check the bowl on the fuel pump & see if it's full of fuel or not.
