He doesn't see a crack in the gear, but he can turn it with a finger when it is in neutral. Thus his professional opinion.
does this sound right, or should I just replace the speedogear and hope it will work? Don't really want to invest in having him yank the transmission etc., just to find out if I'm doing 38 or 45 mph.
and where does one find a 19 tooth speedogear, and possibly the other parts he needs for the bigger job?
Thanks, Bart | | |

If the U joint mounting bolt comes loose and they do the speedo drive gear will spin free on the shaft and will not turn the speedo.

My mechanic worked for Ford in the 50's, early 60's. he said the drive gear is sort of "heat shrunk"onto that shaft... and thus loosens only if the gear cracks. He didn't mention the Ujoint mounting bolt... maybe Chevu did things differently.
I'llpass this along to him. Thanks very much.

If you need a new speedo gear... maybe this place'll have 'em? http://www.tciauto.com/components/speedometer_gears.htm It looks from the diagrams on their page that most of the speedo gears have keyways, so your mechanic might be right...

If you can't find one, let me know. I have an extra.
