I purchased what was said to be a T5 out of a 1985 Camaro V8. Of course the ID tag wasn't with it (I thought it would be a paper/plastic sticker with the 1352-XXX). I noticed the 10 spline input shaft and it had a T/O bearing on it. The input shaft looked just like the 4 speeds I had on the 60's. The shifter was located on end of the tailshaft, so I thought that would make sense for the location on an F-body. So I planked my money down and thought I did good.
Today, I was giving it a real close look over and found a metal tag bolted to a bracket which uses the bolts of the tailshaft. Located next to a 2 prong switch, probably the backup lights and or lockout.
The tag has a number 100001 and under that is 13-38 047. What is it????
Thanks.

I know a couple different guys that bought 4 speeds they were told were T5's only to run the pattern when they got back to the garage and find out they weren't both were swap meet buys. They look alike externally but I have know clue what their tag numbers run. I'll hit some of my books when I get home this evening and see if I can find that number. Also got any pics you can post maybe someone will recognize the critter. This will identify it as a BW T5 but will tell you nothing about the internals. (ie; gear and OD ratio) Likewise, the Camaro T5 will have casting numbers in the case of 1351 or 1352. My WC Camaro T5 mech speedo, has a case number of 1351 while the upc tag carries the numbers 1352 xxxxxxxxx.
This isn't going to tell you much with the exception that if your case does not carry a 1351 or 1352 you don't have a T5. A couple of ways to verify a 5 speed transmission: it should have 6 distinct shift positions...1st -5th and then reverse, or turn the input shaft 360 degrees while in 4th gear....should be 1:1....if you think you have the 5th position (all the way to the right and forward)....turn the OUTPUT shaft 1 full turn and the INPUT shaft should rotate less than 270 degrees for a .63/.72 OD while a .86 OD will turn past 270 degrees with the shifter in 5th gear position.

Casting number is 13-38 according to this page (T50 reference near bottom of page). Not much info on the web. http://www.drivetrain.com/vartransp24.html

If it is the T50, the shifter boss will be oval in shape and the case will be only able to come apart in the center (no top cover). They will handle a stock 305 or 283, however will explode with enough torque.

Running the gears; Reverse is far LEFT & FORWARD, First is straight back from Reverse, Second & Fourth are FORWARD, Third & Fifth are BACK. First gear is about 3.25:1, Fifth gear is about .75:1
My application is 1954 3100 with 283CI and it currently has an Sm420 with enclosed drive shaft. I can live with the light duty and the gear ratios, but I belive the shifter location is a real problem....isn't it too far back and interfear with the "tub" and seats? So my question is; will the tailsection from a T5 work on a T50?
I'll get some pics posted. Thanks

Thanks for the response.....
A minor bend in the road..... I'll continue looking for an 1984 - 1989 V8 F-body T5 or 1985/86 V6 Minivan T5.
Thanks again for all the feedback. | | | | | Joined: Aug 2007 Posts: 1,859 Grumpy old guy playing with trucks, cars, and boats | | Grumpy old guy playing with trucks, cars, and boats Joined: Aug 2007 Posts: 1,859 | I would post it on Ebay or Craigslist. That is stock trans for Vega's and Monza's (and other GM H-bodies). It is not a bad transmission, it is just hard to get parts for. I replaced all the bearings in mine by taking the old bearings out and getting new style units from the local bearing house. The large diameter main shaft bearing doesnt have an interchange.
The synchros are hard to find as well. Tail shaft bushing and rear seal are easy at local FLAPS
for the top shift boot, I used a universal CV boot kit.
My recomendation is to grab a NV3500 from a 4.3 S-10 and just bolt it in. Higher torque capacity than the T5 and will bolt to the 283 easy. Since everyone and their brother is looking for the T5 for older vehicles, these are often overlooked and discarded since they have the integral SBC bellhousing. The salvage yard down the road from my place in WI would sell them for $100 complete with clutch/PP/Flywheel and master cylinder
