Also I need to know the correct way to test it and also hook it up. If I am looking at the gauge, does the wire on the left ("C" cold side) go to the accessory side of my ignition switch and the right ("H" hot side) go to the sender, or is this backwards? Any help would be appreciated!

The green wire (L) goes to the sender, pink (R) to the ignition switch. However, a '55 should still have a mechanical temp guage, not electric. Electric was a running change in '56, std on V8, I have seen 6 cylinders both ways.

The gauge has two leads, I will have to check the colors, but other that that, it looks like all of the ones you see on ebay for sale... so how would I know if it is electric or mechancial and how would I make it match correctly?

Since yours has wires, it's definetly the electric. It may have been swapped out at one time, not really a big deal. Mine even has an electric guage in it (not working, burned out on me). From what I can tell from the diagram, the dk green wire (L) connects to the Cold side, and the pink wire (R) goes to the hot side.
rustednuts, I was only speaking for the Chevrolet. I wasn't aware that GMC used electric, though.
