I'm a big fan of improved brakes. I have disks on the front and later drums in back, along with a dual master setup.

Also have highway friendly gears, modern power leather bucket seats and Cragar mags.

Thats the one I drive. The others are either waiting their turn, or more modified than not.

I have a Mustang II IFS, diagonal 4-link rear,4 wheel discs, dual servo M/C,power steering and air suspension.

I don't plan any radical body mods other than straightening the old boy out!(Thankfully he's not too lumpy!)

As OldSub mentions,I like them to stop and turn too!

Jake brake
Roadranger 10 speed overdrive
Transmission mounted disc parking brake
4" driveshafts with 1610 joints
Dana 70HD rear with disc brakes
ARB air locker and 3.54 gears ready to install
GM I-beam front with disc brakes
Hydrobooster under the floor for the brakes
PS from an IH Scout II
Air helper springs for the rear, soon to have them for the front too
75 gallon aluminum fuel tank outside the frame

My 54 truck took me 1500 hours to finish. Aside from the engine machine work and squirting the paint, I did all the work myself.

Aside from the 235 engine which was bored .60, rotationally balanced, machined for fully flow filtering, sporting dual Carter/Webers, Fentons, remote mount oil filter and adaptor plate water pump w/2 groove harmonic balancer:

1. T5 .72 OD 5 speed transmission, Camaro 3.42 open differential, 84 Firebird clutch disc
2. Passenger side alternator mount, 24 circuit wiring system of my own design, with kill switch, halegen headlights and 3” LED tail lights, LED turn signals and bedrail lights, all relay controlled, 15” supplementary pusher fan
3. sway bars, front/rear with gas shocks, front steering stabilizer
4. All new glass (tinted) with slider split rear window
5. Full cab sound/heat proofing
6. Front discs with adjustable proportioning valve for adjusting rear bias inside cab while driving
7. Old Air Conditioning
8. Custom built 1-7/8” ID exhaust to Cherry Bomb glass pack mufflers
9. Star rims, 15x7 on front, 15X8 on rear with BFG 235/70’s front and 255/70’s on rear with 4” backspacing.
10. Upgraded tie rod ends with complete rebuilt front end/steering
11. Bed wood upgraded to “Veranda” synthetic material
12. TonneauMasters modified full soft tonneau cover
13. frame mounted trailer hitch
14. rebuilt/reupholstered stock seat/3 point seat belts/fire extinguisher, seat back modified to tilt forward with storage shelf on top of new gas tank. Fabric covered door & kick panels
15. hood lock
16. AudioVox cruise control
17. Running board aluminum trim plates
18. Engine compartment LED accent lights (8) and LED cab lights (8)
19. Ah-oo-gah horn, New Port Delay electric wiper motor, tach, vacuum gauge, fuel pressure gauge.

A Jake brake is a valve that blocks off the exhaust on a deisel engine to give more engine brakeing. It is used on all trucks that drive in the mountains & many other deisel trucks. It causes the loud noise you hear when a truck is slowing down. It gets its name from the original manufactoring co. Jacobs Co. Now many co's make them. Kind of like Band-aid.

No. A Jacobs Engine Brake is a device that prematurely opens the exhaust valves near TDC on the compression stroke, dumping the compressed air - waisting energy, slowing the truck down.

Or this is how Jacobs describes it:
"When activated, the Jacobs Engine Brake opens the exhaust valves near the top of the compression stroke, releasing the highly compressed air through the exhaust system.
Little energy is returned to the piston, and as the cycle repeats, the energy of the truck’s forward motion is dissipated, and the truck to slow down."
http://www.jakebrake.com/technology/engine.php

About noise:
"FAQ9:
I'm bothered by the noise of big trucks using their Engine Brakes, what can I do?

ANSWER:
The federal government has required all vehicles manufactured since 1978 to meet noise requirements when delivered to the customer. Today, trucks are required to emit less than 80 dBa of noise when they drive by, as measured at 50 feet. So trucks have been required to meet noise requirements when they leave the dealership as new vehicles for quite some time. The real problem here is modified or defective exhaust systems. There is a good chance that the trucks that are causing the disturbance are running with straight stacks or gutted mufflers. Some are poorly maintained vehicles; some drivers simply enjoy making noise. In any case the use of the engine brake is not the problem."

Here's an example of Jake brakes with no muffler:

I have a web page that lists each of my project trucks and what I plan to do with it. I just looked and its now fully a year old, so its a little out of date. But if you are interested its at this link.

OldSub.com Current Plan

Maybe I'll take some time this evening and do an update...

My 1950 truck is back on the road now. after I imported it from the US I took it off the road to do this:

Disc brakes on the front.
Brake booster fitted
Swaybar fitted.
Tremec TKO 500 trans. installed
Saginaw power steering setup fitted
Rewired everything
some of the panels straightened out and resprayed.

I did all the work myself, but looking at this list I can't understand why it took so long to finish, there are probably people on here who do this stuff in a single weekend!

Stuart.
