For helping keep this great
old truck web site
on the Internet for over 30 years! and not clogged down with Ads! Again, thanks! | | | | Joined: Nov 2008 Posts: 64 Wrench Fetcher | | Wrench Fetcher Joined: Nov 2008 Posts: 64 | I have a 1946 chevy and I am going to box in the frame rails and put a small block chevy in it.I wanted to either put mono springs on or a dropped front axel and leave the stock stearing, but it does not look like I will have enough room for the small block and headers with the steering gear mounted on the frame.I am not crazy about putting an IFS under it but do I have a choice .Thank You for any help you can give me on this. | | | | | Joined: Dec 2001 Posts: 14,522 Moderator: Welcome Centre, Southern Bolters, Legion Hall | | Moderator: Welcome Centre, Southern Bolters, Legion Hall Joined: Dec 2001 Posts: 14,522 | I used my original chassis on my 37 and put in a 350 using block hugger headers and had enough room.....but I am running IFS. I did plate the inside of my chassis up front. I've seen the steering box moved outward to create clearance. Doing so might change the placement of the steering wheel, and will change the relationship of the pitman arm to the steering arms, meaning you'll need to make some adjustments.
Another option is the power steering conversion that puts a power steering box ahead of the axle. I think its the better option.
And then there are all the IFS options that include changing the steering too...

I have a 52 panel and I'm planning on cutting me a metal plate, drilling two holes and bolting the plate to the old holes....while moving out 1 1/2" and drilling holes for the sector to set down in. So, which ever of us tries if first needs to let the other know how it worked out I wanted to go power but the previous owner rebuilt and put all new stuff on the front end and I want to try it like it is. Oh, I'm putting a small block in mine. | | | | | Joined: Feb 2008 Posts: 81 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Feb 2008 Posts: 81 | Could someone please tell me what IFS is? ISF = independent front suspension, Right? | | | | | Joined: Nov 2004 Posts: 121 Wrench Fetcher | | Wrench Fetcher Joined: Nov 2004 Posts: 121 | I don't know how much it needs to be moved but I have heard of people offsetting the engine on some applications. It doesn't have to be centered in the vehicle perfectly. Of course you might not gain enough to work, just a thought. | | |
