The Stovebolt Site Forums The Shop Area Engine Shop Speedometer speedcup and spindle reassembly

[I tried to post this in 'Interiors', but that part of The Stovebolt is not cooperating, so I'm posting in Driveline and maybe the moderator can move it].

I have gone into my speedometer works, cleaned them, lubed the odometer gears with some white grease, and reassembled it. However, not surprisingly, the speedometer doesn't register the correct speed.

I've read that the speedcup is somehow connected to or fused to the spindle, and when the magnetic field causes the speedcup to rotate, the spindle and needle move with it. However, in my case, the speedcup and spindle are not connected in any way, so when the speedcup moves, the spindle and needle stay put.

Does anybody know how the speedcup and spindle are connected so that they move together?

[This is my first attempt at inserting a link to pics. I hope it works]. Look at these pictures of my speedometer innards. The round thing on top is the speedcup. It fits inside the frame below it, which holds the spindle in its center. I believe I need to somehow fuse or connect the spindle to the speedcup.

If you search e-bay motors for 52 chevy truck speedometer there is a pdf truck speedometer repair manual for $10 bucks or so. I haven't had mine apart but if I hold the cup I can't move the shaft so it would have to be attached somehow.

Thanks Neilroy. I ordered a manual today. Thanks also for confirming that the speedcup and shaft are somehow connected. If I figure out how to fix my problem, I'll post my findings here.

Just an FYI, but if you so much as look at that spring wrong, the gauge is toast. Its an extremely sensitive part and any disruption will cause it to never work properly again.

Yeah, I think I may already be there. The good news is since I never go over 45 anyway, I'm not too worried about exceeding the speed limit, but I would like the needle to at least move when I accelerate.

Update:

I got the speedometer repair manual off eBay (thanks Neil), and though it's a very good and detailed manual, it doesn't address the issue of how the spindle or shaft is attached to the speed cup. It simply assumes that it is. Apparently that's not something one should have to repair. I'll keep staring at it and thinking about it and hopefully something will come to me.

I'll see if Keith from the Old Car Manual Project would like to put this manual on his site.
