The Stovebolt Site Forums The Shop Area Engine Shop correct spark plugs?

I went down to my NAPA dealer for some sparkplugs for my "new" '54 GMC pickup, (the truck has what I believe to be a 55-57 canadian pontiac 261 with a 235 head and 1 bbl rochester carb) and the closest engine they could find in their catalogues was a 265. Can someone recommend a sparkplug for my setup?

if it has a 235 head then the 235 plug is what you need

AC #45 but it is doubtful that the will have that exact part number so use the R45. The R just stands for Resistor.

I just looked up the application online at Napa. Tell them to look it up as a Chevy with a 235. Any year from 54 to 62 should get there. Only thing is they didn't show any AC Delco plugs, just Champion and Autolite. They should also be able to use the number off one of your plugs and cross-reference. Cross ref for the R45 also shows a Bosch and NGK.

Napa counter help outdone by a 53 year old man with a bad heart that doesn't get enough blood to his brain. Sad, isn't it.

rigid6 The NKG number for your application is R5670-5 you can get them at Advance auto parts. You will have to order them by the part number of 2298 as the counter meatheads won't know them any outher way. These are the plugs that most of the racing folks use and they are cheap. I have been told that they are a few mm longer and extend into the head further which gets a better ignition of the mixture.

This is kind of a cross reference to another post, but I just called Advance Auto Parts for the NKG plugs that Fat Fenders just referred to...They don't have them, but can get them if I come in before 8:00pm tonight and pay in advance..They are $1.58ea..1.58X6=$9.48...I told them I would go somewhere else..But, they can have them tomorrow..My plugs work perfectly fine..Just wanted to try them out..I don't think the kid has a razor..Take care, Steve

Everybody knows no self-respecting stovebolt will run with a riceburner plug in it! If your parts man can't find a plug listing for your truck, you need a new parts man. If AC plugs were good enough for it when it was new, they'll work right today. As the number goes lower, the plug's heat range gets cooler. AC 45 is the reccomended plug. If you're doing mostly highway driving, run one step cooler plug, a #44. For one that's run mostly short trips, one step hotter, #46, will help keep the fuel and oil fouling under control.

Thr "R" prefix designates "resistor" plugs, not a bad idea if you, or any of your neighbors has a radio or TV in operation. (It cuts down on radio frequency interference.)

Better check the parts you get from our well known suppliers..What's the difference between a plug and a piece of window trim or mirror..By the way, AC stands for Albert Champion..Take care, Steve

DELPHI (the former AC DELCO) has stoppped manufacturing even numbered plugs. If you go to your parts guy and ask for an AC$44 it will cross to AC45. If you have an old parts store in your area, go see if they have any 44's on the shelf and buy them. A recent check on E-bay for AC44 shows that they are selling for about $40.00 for 8 of them. Also a AC Delco rapid fire #7 is the same as an AC44 (I think, maybe AC45Z I have good luck with them. I do not recommend Champion.
As John Sawruk (retired Pontiac enginer) stated at a convention I attended 2 weeks ago. AC DELCO plugs were enginnered for GM vehicles and nothing works better in them.
