My '41 1/2 ton has a '54 235. On the intake manifold just below the carb there is old "line" that has been closed up with a screwed in brass plug. Looking at pictures of other similar engines, I'm not seeing the same thing. However, when looking at '41 - '46 engines, I see this line running somewhere toward the back part of the block. Is it possible that a PO put an older manifold on a '54 block? What is going on - and more importantly what should I do?

On the side of the intake should be a threaded hole for vacuum to wiper motor. Maybe that's it???? Look at photos in the gallery or links at other motors.

The only port I'm aware of in that location would be the vacuum port for the wipers, or on later trucks, the HydroVac brake booster.

Only use for vacuum I can think of would be 1. Wipers, 2. Hydrovac or vacuum assist brakes, 3. Vacuum Primer for a fire engine.

On my trucks, the tube you're describing is a seperate piece below the carb, basically an insulator with a tube stuck into it, not actually part of the manifold. No reason you can't remove it if it's not being used, though I think you'll need shorter studs for the carberator to bolt to then. Not worth the trouble, in my opinion. Just leave it plugged. Tell people it's the blinker booster! wink
