WELL I FINALLY HAVE MY FIRST STOVEBOLT. AFTER A ROUND TRIP DRIVE OF OVER 15 HOURS TO AND FROM TUCSON AZ, SHES FINALLY HOME. AFTER DOING SOME EXTENSIVE RESEARCH FROM A GREAT VAST SEA OF KNOWLEDGE THAT WE CALL THE FORUM, AND LOOKING THREW ENDLESS CRAIGSLIST AND EBAY ADDS THIS IS WHAT I FOUND. SHES A 59 L/B BIG WINDOW TUCSON ORIGINAL. I WAS LOOKING FOR SOMETHING THAT HAD A 235, OR A 289 BUT WHAT I CAME UP WITH IS 327 3 SPEED. SOME IDIOT DECIDED TO MOVE THE SHIFTER FROM THE TREE TO THE FLOOR, BUT IT WORKS. THE ENGINE IS HEALTHY AND RUNS GOOD, NOT MUCH RUST TO SPEAK OF JUST A LITTLE IN THE CAB CORNERS BUT I GUESS THAT NORMAL FOR THESE TRUCKS. NOW THAT I FINALLY HAVE A TRUCK I HOPE YOU ALL WILL BE PREPARED FOR ME TOO BOMBARD YOU WITH QUESTIONS. MORE TO COME ON THIS TRUCK...JOSH http://i466.photobucket.com/albums/rr25/JAWDY101/IMG_1681.jpg http://i466.photobucket.com/albums/rr25/JAWDY101/IMG_1682.jpg http://i466.photobucket.com/albums/rr25/JAWDY101/IMG_1683.jpg http://i466.photobucket.com/albums/rr25/JAWDY101/IMG_1684.jpg http://i466.photobucket.com/albums/rr25/JAWDY101/IMG_1687.jpg

Nice truck. Good luck with it. I know you will enjoy Stovebolting. There is plenty of help & advice available on this website. It's best not to capitalize your post. It resembles yelling.

Congrats on the new truck. How much work do you plan on doing to it? Keeping it original or rodding it?

I'm going to keep her how she is for now, but i would like to rod her out a little. I would like to put a 3" drop axle,3" drop springs in the rear.. since she has 327 i think i need to get rid of that 3 speed and start looking for a 4 speed..as for the body since its in decent shape it will be one of the last things i do (but i will have to get rid of that ugly blue-green)

Looks like you got a nice one,but Stovebolt,I dont think so. That word is used very loosely around here. The term Stovebolt came from the old,old straight six Chevy engines.I have a 1955,2nd powered by a 350 Smallblock and 700R4 trans. Also a 1965 powered by a 500 Cu.in. Caddy engine hooked to a 400 turbo automatic. I guess both of these truck could have been classified as stovebolts at one time, before the sixes were replaced with some real power. They are both great running and looking trucks, and are actually streetrods, just the way I like them. But they are no way Stovebolts any more.

Would anybody have a good guesstimate on how much a decent 4 speed would cost?

Dale,
You are, of course, correct in the official/technical definition of "Stovebolt."

But for purposes of this web site, we have loosened the definition just a tad, just a teenie skoosh (okay, so it's a hole the Hoover dam couldn't block...)

The official word here is that if it is a truck made by General Motors (or any of it's ancestor companies like Rapid or Samson, for example) then it's a "Stovebolt" here. Billy Marlow's '72 GMC 9000 with the 6-71 Detroit is a Stovebolt here as much as my '49 Chevy with a babbited 235. Or your streetrod with the Caddie 500 (great engine, by the way!).

We originally started out just for '39 and '40 Chevrolet trucks (back in '95) but that was too restrictive and after Tom Brownell suggested we expand to cover more years, we went all out and opened it up to everything GM up to '73. The site really took off after that (about '99/2000).

Historically accurate? No. Fun? I certainly hope so!!

Regards,
John

Hope your feeling better; don't want to be sick on turkey day you know.
