Cleaning pieces ready to paint. The parts that are black like inner fenders, bumper brackets , wheels etc etc, What is a recommended black. I was thinking the industrial brand called Hy-Lux enamel in high gloss. About $30 a gallon Anyone used this? What do you guys think. | | | | | Joined: Sep 2007 Posts: 2,644 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Sep 2007 Posts: 2,644 | I'm sure this is blasphemy but I use Rustolium Satin Black. You can get it in quart cans, mix it with some thinner and save a ton of money over these "official" under-hood blacks.

If you use something like laquer on the bumper brackets they will fade.....now please don't ask me how I know this lets just say it was all that was on my shelf once upon a time. | | | | | Joined: Oct 2007 Posts: 18 New Guy | | New Guy Joined: Oct 2007 Posts: 18 | Since I"m not a purist I usually go with the gloss black enamel. That's the reason I want to use industrial enamel. But wasn't sure that gloss is the choice. Not that I'm doing a show truck but want to be close. | | | | | Joined: Feb 2000 Posts: 769 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Feb 2000 Posts: 769 | I am pretty sure that HyLux is the same brand I used to use when I had a Misc. Iron shop some years back. It is a great paint and very durable. I generally used satin because most of the things I painted looked better with out full gloss. I also made truck racks and I would use the same industrial enamel. I would add some dupont hardener to the paint and I got a very shinny finish and great durability. When I was painting iron rails and such I would always cut the paint with lacquer thinner. It would take some of the gloss out of the paint and dried faster.
I am getting ready to paint my frame and axles and I will be using industrial gloss black with hardener. When using the hardener I always used the correct reducer for the paint, not lacquer thinner. | | | | | Joined: Mar 2004 Posts: 874 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Mar 2004 Posts: 874 | I've used Valspar tractor and implement enamel with a hardener in semi gloss black with good results. | | | | | Joined: Oct 2007 Posts: 18 New Guy | | New Guy Joined: Oct 2007 Posts: 18 | Valspar is what I use on the body color Just finished a Dodge D100 and am happy with it. I'm just learning how to spray and having fun. My 68 Chevy will get Valspar single stage enamel. | | | | | Joined: Mar 2005 Posts: 576 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Mar 2005 Posts: 576 | i'm with woody on this one,am a big believer in rustoleum.only colors i've used until recentaly have been gloss and flat black.but have recently tried some of their hammered finishes.and a couple out of their metallic line as well. the matt stainless is an awesome color.................dave 1949 Chevrolet 3100 "When this thing hits 88 miles an hour, you're going to see some serious sh%t." -Doc Brown
