The flywheel on my '54 235 has a bead or dot for TDC, and small straight lines stamped into the flywheel on either side of the bead. Anyone know what those lines might mean in terms of degrees advanced, or degrees retarded? They're not more than an inch away from the bead.

I don't know how many degrees each mark is but according to Motors Truck Manual '54-'59 235s time on the ball and '60-'62 235s time on the first mark clockwise from the ball.

And still the best way to time the sixes is the way it was always done IMHO. By ear. Just run it as high as you can and not get a ping in high gear.

Being pretty dumb about timing my old 235, I first centered a bolt hole in the flywheel within the bell housing hole on the driver's side. I thought the pointer had broken off. (Cletis knows me and knows this is well within my capabilities!) Finishing it off by ear and performance actually worked pretty well.

I now have some flat black paint on the flywheel of my '61 261 and a spot of white paint on the pressed ball. It sure is easier this way.

Thanks all. Still learnin' here. Still not sure if the pressed ball is where it oughta be timed, or if that's TDC. I've got it advanced some from the ball, and it sounds and runs good. But I'm thinkin' maybe I should have it advanced even more.
