| | | | Joined: Feb 2006 Posts: 1,867 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Feb 2006 Posts: 1,867 | I salvaged an old windshield crank and stainless strip out of a 1940 GMC at a junk yard months back. It looked to be in great shape but the body had a lot of grit and rust clinging to it. So I dunked the whole assembly in my electrolysis tank and checked on it this morning.
Everyone should know not to use stainless as the anode (positive) due to the risks involved, but I figured as the electrode (negative) it would be fine. When I pulled it out this morning the stainless strip crumbled to pieces in my hands.
Thought it could serve as a warning to anyone using this process. Ive heard of hydrogen embrittlement in regular steel, but to become an issue it would take months of electrolysis. Maybe for stainless this is not the case???

I want to try the electrolysis and see how it works.I've seen very positive results from others using this method of rust removal.
