when you guys put dual carbs on how much work did you do to the internals of the engine? I have a 235 but I know I want dual exhaust, nothing sounds cooler!!! but the dual single carbs I never really considered until I saw how cool they look. does it wake the motor up quite a bit when you do that?

rusty52stovey,

IMHO...two carburetors will work fine with an almost stock engine. To get the most out of the 'in' improvement, a corresponding 'out' modification works well. This means some headers and dual exhaust. Another bolt on that finishes the picture out would be some type of high energy ignition or solid state ignition.

These are about all you can tack onto your engine without going inside and doing major work. The dual carbs, dual exhaust and fancy ignition wake it up to a noticeable degree and it all looks good to boot.

i have dual carbs on mine and it did some good when i put them on but not a lot. and i do believe they use more fuel. now i have upgraded to fenton headers and t-5 trans 2.73 rearend hei distributor and other things and to get the most out of all that they are necessary. just my opinion. romn

Ive heard from a few guys on the oldgmctrucks website that reported better fuel mileage when running dual carbs. I cant remember if I read that here as well...

Check out the links section. Theres a bunch of good vendors that sell all sorts of parts.

I prefer these guys for most of my stuff;

The the inside carb/air cleaner on a triple-carb set-up might be tight against the firewall in a Chevrolet engine bay.

Tom Langdon is a good source of parts and advice.

Stock fuel pump will be more than adequate for a dual carb setup on any 216-261 setup. In fact, if you go with Langdon's dual Holley/Weber setup, you'll want to use a pressure regulator and drop it back to 3.5 psi.

I'm running a pair of Carter/Weber 2bbl carbs from Langdon's on a 235+ engine with 261 grind cam and performance and mileage is good. Installation is straightforward and after the initial synchronization, they have held their tune. Have pics in my Webshots of both the dual C/W and single H/W install.

now running two carbs is that like running three deuces. it will run off of one until you kick it down. or do both carbs dump fuel in together? and are they hard to tune? I helped a guy with three deuces on a olds rocket motor and it sucked!!!

For a dual setup you would want them to work together to even out the distance from the carbs to the cylinders. With a triple you can use a center primary and secondary or dummy end carbs. It sounds like you already know where the challenge is going to be and syncronized carbs are only as good as their linkage. The shiny parts in the catalogs are reproductions of antique speed parts and the job of the “floating” linkage that comes with them was simply to hold both throttle plates vertical for racing. Making it idle smoothly is accomplished by bending the linkage and has been described by some as “poor at best”. If you can find a vintage intake with an integral throttle pivot rod it will work like a dream or if you like Tom Langdon’s setup he engineered a pivoting solution to work with the carbs he sells. Here’s some intake pic’s:

And here’s some info on choosing O/E type carbs:

Have fun.
