Is this on your '51 pickup? On my old truck there was a piece of rubber mashed in there from factory (I assume). Over the years it has turned to black goo.
I don't know if this material was some type of bonding tar or just a thing piece of material to keep chafing and squeaking down. I'm not much help...maybe the correct answer will be along soon.

Thanks, yes my 51 chevy | | | | | Joined: Mar 2006 Posts: 1,703 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Mar 2006 Posts: 1,703 | David, Yes that is how it is, the floppy wings you are refering to just set on the cowl seal and when ya close a correctly adjusted hood they lay tight on that seal an that is how they were made. If ya need some pics of the hood and cowl seal let me know. Tim | | | | | Joined: Sep 2001 Posts: 29,269 Bubba - Curmudgeon | | Bubba - Curmudgeon Joined: Sep 2001 Posts: 29,269 | Tim,
I also thought as you did regarding what was being asked.
I now think, however, that David is referring to the brace attached to the underside of the hood, near the rear of the hood. Most of my hoods had some sort material, as described by Stuart. One of my hoods had a very creative and innovative former owner and between that brace and the hood were strips of 1/8" masonite (and the gooey/rubber-like material).

That is the brace, the one under the hood. I beleave Tim(Sw) is thinking of the same brace Because I was thinking the same thing for when the hood is closed it has that room to move if it does hit the cowl seal before the hood is closed all the way. But your saying there is some type materal under neath. would this be glude in place or just pushed in and held that way. Any I deal what to use to replace this gooey rubber ?

I am going to have eat come crow here! My truck is a 55/1st 4400. The hood is in the basement blasted and primed. I just went down and looked at the rear hood brace. There is no material between the brace and the skin of the hood. There is no trace of anything and I didn't remove anything (that I remember).
The skin is tensioned so that about a 1/4" room exists between bracket and sheetmetal. I remember a thread about this years ago and I thought I recalled hearing about a tar impregnated pad running side to side that was a buffer between the skin and the reinforcing bar. I swear that I have seen that gooey pad on some AD rigs.

That's all I'm going to use. | | | | | Joined: Jun 2012 Posts: 85 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Jun 2012 Posts: 85 | This issue has been silent. I found this thread looking for same answer but, I am armed with a few facts.
1951 3600 Chevy. Factory assembly manual states you use an "anti-squeak pad" between the "rear reinforcement bar" and the hood sheet metal. An adhesive is used to maintain its location. Mine is all crispy and bubbled.
Anyone use a material for the pad and have a source, name, nomenclature, manufactures, etc?

Classic Parts of America Part No. 23-325, should work for hood.
