A MECHANIC PAL IS PUTTING A COMPLETELY REBUILT 1962 STOVEBOLT 261 IN MY 1940 CHEV HALF TON. It'll have a 3:55 rearend. My question is ,will the gearing in the original 4 speed tranny be too low for this set up ?? I kept the original 216. Truck is original other than these changes and 12 volt. Thanks,jim | | |

Your four speed has direct drive forth, no over or under drive. It should be a great combination. I run a 250 with automatic and 3.42 rear axle in a '37. At 70 mph its turning about 2900 with a 235/75R15 radial (28.7" tall). Joe | | |

Time'll tell if they're up to the 261 and 65 mph.I plan to putt-putt down back roads with it ,mostly. I'd hate to modify the old truck anymore than I have. It's a real neet piece of rollin history to me.jim | | |

I have the original 4 speed with 4.11 gears in mine and it feels like it is geared too low, I can haul some pretty heavy loads with it and it doesn't feel like anything is back there at all. It pulls hills really well. I have a 3.08 rearend I am going to put in it. I think you will really like the 3.55 rearend. I get about 18 mpg with the 4.11 rearend so I am expecting a bit of improvement. Let us know how it turns out.
