Just wondring your thoughts on taking a 1951 AD 1 1/2 ton truck Shortning the frame behind the cab and putting a long bed pick up box on it making some sort of fenders to keep the dual wheels, it seems like it would make a cool heavy duty looking pick up, or would it be a crime to cut it up ? has any one done something like this any suggestions or ideas Thank You Green 48

My first thought is that if you were dealing with a 4100 you would have 1-1/2 ton truck with a 137 inch wheelbase. That is the same wheelbase as a 1-ton pickup, meaning the 1-ton pickup bed would be a close fit.

You still would need to modify the rear fenders to work over 20-inch duals...

Do you have a 4400?

I like the idea, exept for the cutting the frame part. OldSub has the right idea, go for a long set of bedsides, then make custom fenders to fit. I beleive there are wide fenders available in 'Glas, you could trim the openings to fit the 20s. Or alternatively, find a couple of sets of decent steel fenders, then do a bit of cut and splice to make a wider and longer set, which would allow for a larger opning while keeping the overall proportions in scale with each other.

I don't know what weight this Auto Car truck is, but it sure is sharp. It was at Brooks Oregon.

It's on the fourth webpage, and second picture on the top row.

That's my favorite Autocar body style, late 40's with flat windshield, and usually with 12x24 tires, but somehow the one with what looks like a pickup chassis underneath doesn't do it for me.. It is a nice color though.

But for the 1.5 ton Chevy pickup idea. I agree, should only need a 1 ton bed with long running boards plus a few more brackets, and the special wide rear fenders you'll have to make.

For a time I was thinking about duals for my 3800, and what I had planned - to keep from compromising the originality of the fenders - is spacers to fit between the fenders and the bed sides. A small alteration to the running boards would be all that was needed to make it work.

green48,

There are pics out there of a '47 to '54 red crew cab dually. Not sure where I found them, but I have a few.

The builder simply widened the bed so that the stock fenders cover the outside wheels while tubbing the inner wheels. It looks close to stock from a distance. He only had to widen the tailgate, a lot simpler than doing 2 fenders.

PM me and I can send the pics to you.

I'm putting dual wheels under my '59 3800, I plan on widening my rear fenders to cover the outside wheels.

I spotted the 4x4 chassis on the A-car too and it puts me in mind of a full K-W conventional I saw on a one ton chassis a while back. I know it is still a lot of work and to each his own but I don't get it. Another thing that I think can be improved upon are those washtub rear fenders on the A-car.

As for the yellow 47 I like idea of modifying an original chassis and adapting a clean PU body but I do not like the idea of the widening of one. Talk about proportions! The wide front panel is a real eyesore sticking out past the cab as it does and spoils the considerable effort and talent used to do it.
But as I said, to each his own and I'm sure not everyone likes my trucks either.
