I'm finally wrapping up a painstaking and expensive 1 1/2 year complete brake rebuild on my '57 6400. None to soon either as I badly need to put her back to work. I just need two last parts. I pulled the rear hubs off to replace the wheel seals and the tin lock rings that lock the two hub nuts to each other and the spindle are trashed. Many broken tabs/fingers. Any idea who sells them? I checked with NAPA and they looked at me like I'd asked for a pair of fuel rods for a nuclear reactor. If there isn't a source, has anyone come up with a different solution? I guess I could try to make them, but it would take 8 hours apiece to fab something like that with hand tools.

Post a photo of your lock washer and maybe someone can match it. It took me a year to find the correct washer for my 54/55 GMC 2-ton COE. A friend found them at by Euclid (ArvinMeritor).

I don't need to post a photo. You did it for me! The piece on the right is what I need. The nuts were salvagable. I fabbed a spanner socket for them. Now if I could just find the locks, I'd be done! Looks like I need to find someone with a Euclid/Arvin Meritor catalog.

Let me assure you that this coincidence is just dumb luck. I obtained other incorrect styles/sizes via eBay, local parts stores, and people trying to help.

I do not know who might carry the EUCLID parts.

Try Central Truck and Trailer Parts in Hagerstown MD, (301) 797 1995, ask for Randal, and mention that Grigg suggested you call.

He should be able to get them from the part number Tim supplied, or if you measure yours he can probably find them that way too. In addition to being able to find odd parts, and often having them in stock, they have great prices, and will ship to you.

atomarc here found a great site to order axle lock washers from.

I had to cut a small amount off the inside tabs but the worked out great! I ordered two in standard sizes and two in metric that were almost perfect for my COE. With shipping they were less then $9 for the four of them.

One more thing, many of these nuts look the same but the dimensions differ. So just because Tims looks like yours, there could be an inch difference in actual size.

I have a Euclid catalog on my desk. Looks like Chev uses either a 2 1/8 spindle or a 2 1/2 spindle. We now use a 1 piece locking nut, but when we still used these, we always threw away the old locks because if a nut comes loose on the driver side, the wheel comes off. If it comes loose on the passenger side, it gets tight to where it locks off. If you can't find a quick source, there are about a half dozen Euclid distributors that I deal with.

Here are the dimensions of the "nut" and "lock":

Inner diameter (opening) of the nuts (and the lock): 2.53"
Outer diameter of the nuts: 3.78"
Outer diameter if the ring on the lock: 2.89"
Width of the fingers on the lock: 0.22"

Sounds like a E-4858 Euclid nut and a E-4876 Euclid lock washer.

Again, I appreciate all the help and leads. I measured mine and they are in fact the same as Tim's. I checked with Rowe Truck Equipment here in Lafayette, IN today and gave them the Euclid numbers. They don't handle that brand but crossed it over to a Dayton 06-567 Lock washers - bent w/tab. Package of two, 2.50 I.D., 3.87 O.D., .06 height, and the application is listed as GM T150/T170. I do have a GM T150 axle. $7.10 for the pair and they will be here Wednesday. Maybe these additional numbers will help somebody out.

I have used some sheet metal, a drill press, a file, and a die grinder, and made those lock rings on occasion. I doubt it I made minimum wage doing it, but at least the job got done!
