What do ya'll think of this combo, 327 chev 350 hp, 9 inch f-ord rear end w/ discs, turbo 350 tranny- stock replacement?? Is this a bullet proof combo?? Any comments would help me make my final decision worth while.

If your swapping in all that why not go with the TH400 or a 700R4. The TH400 is stronger than a TH350. The 350 however has a higher 1st gear ratio. It depends on what your goal is for the vehicle- ie Daily Driver, street rod or a worker. For a daily driver go with a 700R4, street rod or worker go with the TH400. I have run all three and the 400 is best for strength and dependability.

sswapp,

The nine inch seems to be plenty tough and there are LOTs of part available for it. The downside is that the wheel bolt pattern won't match the front on a Chevy pickemup. I put a '67 **** rear end under my '49 Chevy pickup for two reasons. 1. The wheel bolt pattern matches the Mopar front suspension and 2.) I already had the **** rear end that was the same width as the Chevy 12-bolt it replaced.

One other reason for the popularity may be because of the abiblity to quickly change gear ratios by just swapping the center section.

if you don't already have the 9", let someone else spend the big bucks and find something cheaper like an s-10 rear. s-10 owners routinely upgrade to 8-cyl engines without changing the rear. further, the s-10 rear is the correct width and bolt pattern.

for the tranny, i'd stick with the th350. it's lighter, takes less hp to spin, and it's plenty strong enough for a 350 hp small block.

don't overdesign your drivetrain. think efficiency.

Sweet, I do already have the **** rear end, kinda dumb luck I ended up with it without forking out anything. My padre is a machinist and can redrill my lug pattern without any problem. Only one question- after I get the correct lug pattern and I get the rotors-calipers to match the front--- is the F-rd 9" going to be to wide?? I guess I can get offset rims, but I'd rather have a little meat to work with.

sswapp,

Should be in the vicinity of 62" across the wheel flanges for the AD pickup. I think the '67 LTD rear end I used was 62.5".

What parts are you filling the 327 block with?

Rear gear ratio?

Probably going to just keep it close to stock and toned down. Haven't gotten the guts for the engine yet. I want to run pump gas so a 9:1 ratio is 'bout it. Bolt on horses like heads, headers, intake, carb, etc.
