Ok, I have a 78' seirra classic shortbed pickup with a 350 in it. When i bought the truck it had around 96000 miles on it and didnt take any oil (last fall), from what i realized. last spring I put a crane energizer cam in it. Now it take oil like crazy. I drive it to school everyday(unless bad weather) which is a 10 mile round trip. I have to add a quart almost every 40 miles. What causes this? My dad has a 78 malibu that does the same thing and he even replaced the piston rings.
there is no oil on the ground when i back up and no oil leaks on the engine block.

Im stumped, I would love any help you guys are willing to give me, even tho my truck doesnt fit the "pre 73'" category. LOL

Thanks-Dustin

Could the additional cam lift have wiped out the old valve seals? Brian

I'm with 64fleetside. Either that or the extra lift and/or duration was too much for the old valve springs.

With that much oil consumption I would think the additional lift has caused the valve seals and guides to wear. You probably had some gunk buildup on the valve stems which acted as an abrasive. One thing I have learned over the years is not to do a cam upgrade without reworking the heads, and it sounds like you have now learned that leasson, too.

Due to the miles, I would recommend a complete rebuild, top and bottom. If you rebuild the heads only with the higher performance components, the bottom end will wear out faster.

I would say that maybe the bottom side of your intake gasket didn't seal and you're sucking oil into your intake ports. If replacing your cam is all you did, then your intake is most likely your cause.
Just my 2 cents worth,
Scott
