I'm no mechanic so please tell me what causes an engine to keep trying to run when it's switched off? Is there anything I can do here in the shop until I can take it to my mechanic to get it tuned up properly? It's very annoying and embarrasing.

The carbon becomes hot enough to ignite the unburt fuel that is still in your cylinders after you shut the key off. A too rich fuel mixture can cause this condition.
sowsear46, its good to have another Panhandler on the 'Bolt. Next time I drive through Hale Center, you will have to show me your truck.

Many of those of that era had an idle selenoid for that reason. Also a vacuum leak can cause it. If it is an auto trans. you can help by turning the ignition off while it is still in drive.

I did notice black sut on the car port floor where I crank it up all the time. It only runs on after it gets hot from driving. If it is carbon build up then how or what can I use to try and clean it out?

Too hot of spark plugs can cause it also. How about the carb. base gasket. What carb does it have model B or monojet Rochester?

This gives you a more controlled volum. To mutch water will kill your crankshaft bearings. | | |

Put a 1/2 to full can slowly down a vacuum line or down carb throat on a fully warmed up engine. Put the last little bit in fast to kill engine, let sit 5-10 minutes then go drive it like you stole it. Will white smoke a while, don't be alarmed. Brian | | |
