I understand it helps from burning out your points and gives the engine a boost. True?

I and probably a few others have asked this question and all responses were positive. | | | | Joined: Dec 2003 Posts: 2,733 Shop Shark | Shop Shark Joined: Dec 2003 Posts: 2,733 | It is an excellent product. I know tons of people with Pertronix and it just works. Highly recommended. | | | | Joined: Dec 2006 Posts: 1,154 Shop Shark | Shop Shark Joined: Dec 2006 Posts: 1,154 | Good.....but for the money Langdon's HEI is way better. The Petronix relies on your old dizzy. Some people have had reliability problems with the system, with unexpected failures to operate that shuts the engine down with no warning. It's a good idea to keep a set of points and a condenser in the glove box to install in case of a sudden stop.
My nephew's Plymouth Roadrunner 383 engine has that system, and my only gripe about it is the fact the reluctor that installs under the rotor is a little sloppy. That makes the ignition timing inaccurate by whatever amount it is able to move back and forth. It would be a pretty simple fix to just glue the reluctor the the rotor, I guess, or use a piece of shim stock to take up the slack.
Any bushing wear or looseness where the distributor shaft fits the housing will also allow timing errors, so start with a wear-free distributor, or a rebuilt unit. Jerry

I was considering the Petronix for my 65 C-10 with 230 L6. I don't know about the Langdon HEI. It it just as easy to install? | | | | Joined: Feb 2004 Posts: 28,674 Kettle Custodian (pot stirrer) | Kettle Custodian (pot stirrer) Joined: Feb 2004 Posts: 28,674 | Mike, the quick fix for your 230 is to get a wrecking-yard HEI for a late model 250 or 292. It's a drop-in swap, and GM standard repair parts are available at any FLAPS. Jerry

Tom checks out each unit for proper performance in fact on the bottom of the units you can see a hand written "OK" in white lettering. He stands by his products and will help with any technical questions via email or phone. In tech. articles on this site a guy converted a dizzy with a file and another guy said it was too much work and to buy a Langdon's? Its all good just personal choice.....T/C Steve | | | | Joined: Sep 2007 Posts: 56 Wrench Fetcher | Wrench Fetcher Joined: Sep 2007 Posts: 56 | Thanks Jerry. Did the HEI come standard in the late model 250/292? I thought all those engines came with standard points and condenser. Most wrecking yards don't have the older parts, so I'll have to search.
Thanks Mike | | | | Joined: May 2008 Posts: 35 Shop Shark | Shop Shark Joined: May 2008 Posts: 35 | Got my Ignator and installed it! Easy to install and seems to make the starting a bit easier. Still can't drive the banana because I haven't converted the brakes. | | | | Joined: Feb 2004 Posts: 28,674 Kettle Custodian (pot stirrer) | Kettle Custodian (pot stirrer) Joined: Feb 2004 Posts: 28,674 | There are two basic I-6 HEI distributors, one with a remote coil, the other with the coil integral with the cap like a V-8 HEI. The basic module and pickup coil is the same, with only minor wiring differences and a different distributor cap. Either one should be a drop-in fit to the block on your 230. I've done several conversions on 216/235/261 engines with a little machining to correct oil pump drive concerns. Nothing like eliminating that periodic point/condenser change and getting a hotter spark in the process! Jerry
