About how many rpm's could a well build 292 handle? 2. Would it be possible to take it up to 5500 religiously? 3. Does the 292 have 6 ports for intake and 6 for exhaust? I'm asking this because I might eventually think about building a FI 292 with a single (or dual) turbo setup. Just for fun, of course Drew

2. thay do not have 12 ports thay have 6
one for each two cylinders there is 12 port heads but thay are spendy and hard to find. whith twin turbos you would not need 12 ports
I wonce had the same idea about 250 six I picked the 250 becuse of the higher rpm and qicker revs I have herd of 250 taking 7000 rpm whith out exploding allthou I would be the last one to try it | | |

The GM 292 factory head, along with the 230 and 250 inline 6s, is a 9 port head. There are three intake ports and six exhaust ports. Each intake port is shared between two cylinders. And from a performance standpoint if that weren't bad enough a head bolt boss is cast smack dab in the middle of each intake port.
There has been much research and testing done to improve the inlet flow of the stock cylinder head. Everything from an extreme port and polish and larger valves to removing the head bolt boss altogether and replacing it with lump of material which is either expoxied or bolted in to improve flow.
And with lightweight pistons you can safely take a well built, balanced 292 to 5500 rpms with ease.

Get a copy of Santucci's book on Chevy Inline Sixes, he covers all the aspects of rodding these engines.
