For helping keep this great
old truck web site
on the Internet for over 30 years! and not clogged down with Ads! Again, thanks! | | | | Joined: Sep 2007 Posts: 84 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Sep 2007 Posts: 84 | Howdy: I've got a '53 3100 with the original 216. It sat for about 25 years. I got the motor running. I initially set it up with a gravity feed fuel system. Well, I rebuilt the fuel pump and the carburetor and it runs GREAT!...once I get it running. The engine WILL NOT start without a little help from some starter fluid. Once it's running it will run forever and pretty smooth. Anybody got any ideas?
Thanks,
Craig

The old inlines need it to start, even in the summer months, Scott | | | | | Joined: Mar 2008 Posts: 60 Wrench Fetcher | | Wrench Fetcher Joined: Mar 2008 Posts: 60 | Sounds like you need to replace the pump in the carb. They dry out and don't pump or the check ball is gumed up and stuck. | | | | | Joined: Jan 2008 Posts: 4,962 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Jan 2008 Posts: 4,962 | Take the air cleaner off and look into the carb. It should squirt fuel when you open the throttle. Otherwise your accelerator pump isn't working. Most old inliners started the best with 2 squirts. Most people of my generation who learned to drive were taught to pump the pedal twice before cranking. If your accelerator pump isn't working, and it is going to be difficult to start. And it is very likely that it isn't if it sat 25years. Back when your chev was young, it was common to pour a couple of table spoons of gas in the carb until we got around to rebuilding the carb. | | |
