yes i did the research but couldn't find the answer. so here goes, i put a remote filter on my 54/235 but the oil guage read to low when i by pass the filter it reads ok. what is the proper filter to use on this set up? ron

If your engine has been drilled for "full-flow" oiling the recommended remote base is a 3/4"X 16 thread which uses the Ford or Chrysler filters...such as the Puralator PL30001 filter with a built-in bypass valve. The oil flow has been reversed from the original flow and the pressure side out to the filter is now from the front port and the return is to the rear port.....just the opposite flow of the original stock setup.

If you did not drill your block for "full-flow" oiling you're going to have to use some stock sized lines (same diameter as the original flex lines) or you will loose volume and pressure.

On the modified full-flow system the oil flows from the pump to the filter before it goes to the bearings....hence, the need for a bypass should your filter become clogged.

On the stock system being routed to a relocation mount, you're going to need to use a reducers to go from the 1/2"NPT ports down to the 1/8 NPT fitting line.

Which ever way you went, be sure to fill the new replacement filter on the bench until it is completely filled and absorbed all the oil it can hold. Starting up either system without doing this is going to have an adverse effect on oil pressure and undoubtedly take it's toll on the rotating assembly.

Some people have suggested placing a restrictor-washer where the "supply" line comes out of the block (at the inflow line to the filter).

For all the filtering the by-pass filter is alleged to do I am considering removing mine entirely. I did notice a PSI drop with the filter in place and I change my oil about every 1000 miles so I am sure I won't be harming the engine.

I have 1/2" lines on my filter to block and back lines. I screwed up one engine/motor using 1/8" lines before I figured it out. there are pictures in my album if you need them. And to me the lines in your picture look too small.

The original by-pass filter relies on flow restrictors to prevent excessive oil pressure drop. Since you have used a free flow type of remote filter adapter, you will need to add a flow restrictor as mentioned by tclederman. It could be as simple as a metal disc drilled with a small hole (maybe .030" to .060") and captured in one of the compression fittings. I don't remember how the stock by pass filters did this but if you have one, you could dissect it to figure it out. It might have a restrictor orifice somewhere or perhaps it controls flow by using small ID hose.

Hey Virginia Firetruck.....we have drilled our blocks for the full-flow filter system and are using the -8AN fittings with 1/2" hose. It appears that Ron didn't go that direction and is running the bypass system. That's why when he bypasses the filter, his pressure comes up.

It appears that he's got the 1/2NPT fittings on the relocation mount, reduced down, but the lines are still too large for the BYPASS system to function correctly. Too much flow going to the filter, which is going to add to the normal 5-7 pound loss with the bypass system. The stock lines used with the bypass system are at most 1/8" ID and it appears that these lines are closer to 5/16" OD....which explains his pressure loss. Adding a restrictor, like Ed's 53 points out, would correct the problem.
The smaller the restriction, the more pressure he'd gain to his bearings but the less oil that would be filtered.

I agree totally with Olblue49, that the bypass system is ineffective. Bleeding pressure off the bearings for the sake of minimal filtering just doesn't seem like a prudent decision. Drilling the block for a full-flow filtering system, is going to give you 100% filtering and vastly increased oil pressure at both speed and idle.

Remove the filter and see if the center hole in your mount has pipe threads in it. The simplest restrictor is simply an npt plug with a metering hole threaded directly into the mount. A 1/32" hole will result in no appreciable pressure loss and about 1 quart per minute of filtering. Line size won't matter as the metering hole will determine flowrate.
